Locals fare well at Explorer competition

Huntington Beach athletes turned in top placements Oct. 29 at the third event of the National Scholastic Surfing Assn. Southwest Conference Explorer competition held at Mission Beach in San Diego. Rick Fignetti topped the locals by taking first place in both the Explorer Duke and Explorer Super Seniors divisions. Other placements for Huntington surfers included: Austin Ortiz (third, Explorer Mens); Taylor McDole (sixth, Explorer Mens); Lee Toresdahl (sixth, Explorer Masters; sixth, Explorer Seniors; fourth, Explorer Super Seniors); Biagi Mancini (fifth, Explorer Seniors); Terry Carmadella (third, Explorer Duke) and Peter Townend (fourth, Explorer Duke).

HB Girls Softball sign ups available

Huntington Beach Girls Softball, an Amateur Softball Assn. recreational league, has opened registration for its spring 2012 season. Girls ages 5 to 14 are welcome to join the league. The 2012 season runs January through May, with practices and games held at Circle View Elementary School (6261 Hooker Dr., Huntington Beach). Registration is open through Dec. 23, with a $25 discount offered for early registration before Dec.15. For more information, visit https://www.hbgs.org.

Fastpitch softball registration open

South Huntington Beach Girls Fastpitch Softball is holding sign ups for its 2012 spring season. SHB is an Amateur Softball Assn. recreational softball league for girls ages 5 to 14. Online registration is available at https://www.shbgfs.org through Dec. 31.

In-person registration dates are Sunday, Dec. 4 and Dec. 11 (noon to 3 p.m.) and Dec. 21 (6 to 9 p.m.) at First Class Pizza, 18671 Brookhurst St., Huntington Beach.
