Youth Scene: Eagles win Garden Grove Bowl game

The Costa Mesa Pop Warner Eagles Pee Wee football team (ages 10,11 and 12) dominated once again with a convincing 37-6 victory over La Mirada in the Garden Grove Bowl on Saturday.

The victory was the seventh straight impressive win for the Eagles. Coached by Mike Gilbert, the offensive firepower was led by quarterback Spencer Hook and running backs Steven Muise and Devin Pacheco. The outstanding blocking was provided by fullback Spencer Morrison and linemen Deshandre Kerkoff, Levi Hooper, Nic Mazur, Christian Delgado, Griffin Saltron and Christopher Rodriquez.

The stout defense included the aforementioned players, plus PJ Steiner, Rylan Davis, Jake McIntyre, Chace Jacques, Carson Letterman and Charlie Godshall. Dominic Loftus, Garrett Wright, Cole Whitelaw, Josiah Vazquez, Clyde Moore and Cameron Jones were all integral in the successful season as well.

The Eagles finished 9-2 with crushing victories over Tustin, Los Alamitos, Santa Margarita, San Clemente, La Mirada, Anaheim, East LA, and Long Beach.

CdM wins gold

The Corona del Mar Aquatics 14U girls’ water polo team won the championship in the gold level of the 50th annual Southern Pacific Age Group Tournament on Sunday.

Led by three goals apiece from Kelly Morgan, Lauren Castleton and Maddie Musselman and outstanding goaltending from Heidi Ritner, including a five-meter penalty shot save, CdM defeated the Irvine Kahuna WPC, 9-4.

In Sunday’s earlier game, CdM defeated SoCal “B,” 11-3, to reach the final.

In bracket play on Saturday CdM defeated eventual third-place finisher Los Alamitos, 13-8, and OCWPC, 17-2.

Other players making significant offensive and defensive contributions throughout the weekend were: Katalina Aviles, Brooke Banta, Isabelle Braun, Devon Cooper, Delaney Gendron, Caitlin Harvey, Parker Hoffman, Leora Kalili, Sarah Lawson, Elizabeth McKenzie, Carina Mulligan and Emily Ritner.

Seahawks win playoff game

The Newport Mesa Jr. Midget Seahawks football team won its first playoff game, 39-8, over the Southgate Aztecs.

Moving the chains multiple times was Blake Kormos, who carried the ball eight times for 69 yards and two touchdowns. Kormos also pulled in a 30-yard pass from Chase Garbers. In his 76 yards of total rushing, Anthony Battista also scored six and made an interception.

William Hunter caught two touchdown passes of 85 and 23 yards from Stephen Von Der Ahe, who completed seven of eigh for 151 yards. Also reeling in a touchdown pass from Von Der Ahe was Jason Simaan, and Peter Bush caught an extra-point conversion.

Holding the Aztecs to only four first downs was ferocious defense from Sutty Barbato, Karl Donovan, Nick Yi, Jack Genova and Kobe Benter. On the line, Brandon Fryer, Michael Quinn, Garrett Cleary and Charlie Muller were rock solid. The team is coached by Tim Kuzmic.
