SAN DIEGO — Jessica Amaral had a goal and an assist to lead the No. 16-seeded Pirates past No. 9 Miramar in the second round of Southern California Regional playoffs Tuesday.

Kiley Leshin scored for OCC (15-4-4) off an assist from Amaral in the 55th minute. Amaral later scored in the 70th minute, when Nicole Vanderlaan assisted.

OCC goalie Katie O’Banion made five saves.

Miramar finished the year at 17-1-2.

The Pirates will play on Saturday in the Southern California Regional semifinals against No. 4 Santiago Canyon, beginning at 2 p.m. at Santiago Canyon College. The winner advances to the State Final Four.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Vanguard 56, La Sierra 46

COSTA MESA — Esther Timmermans scored 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds to help the Lions to a nonconference win Tuesday.

Jordanna Smith added 12 points and nine rebounds for No. 10-ranked Vanguard (2-0).

La Sierra is 1-10.

The Lions play Northwest Christian College to open a tournament at Corban University in Salem, Ore. on Thursday at 10 a.m.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Whittier 93, Vanguard 78

COSTA MESA — Senior guard Christopher Raybon scored 25 points to lead the host Lions in the nonconference game Tuesday.

Raybon made four of seven shots from three-point range and was nine of 10 from the foul line, though he did have eight of his team’s 28 turnovers.

Christopher Kupets had 19 points, 10 assists and seven turnovers, while Taylor Kelly added 13 points for Vanguard (3-3). Whittier (1-2) shot 54.1% from the field and had 17 steals.
