Newport, CdM advance

FRESNO — The Newport Harbor High girls’ volleyball team outlasted host Clovis West, 23-25, 27-25, 21-25, 25-18, 15-12, in the first round of the CIF State Division I Championships Tuesday.

The sixth-seeded Sailors (26-9) will play at No. 2-seeded Marymount (31-4) Saturday at 7 p.m. in the semifinals of the Southern California bracket.

Cinnamon Sary had 37 kills and five digs, while setter Torey Thompson had 60 assists and four digs. Allison Schelin added 11 kills and six digs, Carolyn Bockrath had 10 kills, Kasey Thompson had seven kills, Tatum Norton had 17 digs and Hunter Jennings had five digs for Newport Harbor, the runner-up in CIF Southern Section Division I-AA. Marymount is the CIF Southern Section Division I-A champion.

Sea Kings edge Torrey Pines

SAN DIEGO — Corona del Mar rallied for a 25-15, 22-25, 22-25, 25-16, 19-17 victory at Torrey Pines in the first round of the CIF State Division I Championships Tuesday.

The No. 5 seeded Sea Kings (32-4) will play at top-seeded Los Alamitos (36-3) Saturday at 7 p.m. in the semifinals of the Southern California bracket.

Grace Kennedy led CdM with 23 kills, while Hayley Hodson added 19 kills and Britton Taylor had 16 kills.

CdM was the runner-up in CIF Southern Section Division I-A, while Los Al is the CIF Southern Section Division I-AA champion.
