Newport Harbor 1, Edison 0

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Junior Jill Messersmith scored in the second overtime to help the Sailors upset the Chargers in their Sunset League opener Thursday.

Senior Josie Jogwe and junior Jenna Castillo were aggressive with shots during regulation. Senior defender Shannon Boler, as well as senior goalies Meaghan Kay and Emily Browne stood out on defense.

Browne made two crucial saves in overtime to preserve the win for Newport Harbor, which also received key contributions from Madison Wooters, Jennifer Munoz, Rosalie Deliz, Matilda Higman and Natalie Ward.

Corona del Mar 2, Irvine 1

CORONA DEL MAR — Emily Krebs and Annie Alvarado each scored in the second half for the Sea Kings in their Pacific Coast League opener Thursday.

Ally Brahs had an assist for CdM (12-1-1, 1-0 in league).

Goalie Kendall Mulvaney, who entered with seven straight shutouts, suffered a finger injury toward the end of the first half, CdM Coach Bryan Middleton said. Mulvaney did not allow a goal in the first half.

Sarah Cox, a standout bound for Stanford, played goalie in the second half.

Middleton said Mulvaney's status will be determined game to game.

CdM plays at Northwood Saturday at 11 a.m.

St. Margaret's 3, Sage Hill 2

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO — Jack Percival and Eric Cheng each scored to help the Lightning rally, but Sage Hill lost in the second overtime against its Academy League rival Thursday.

Trailing, 2-0, Percival, a first-team all-league selection last year, scored 25 minutes into the second half. It was Percival's first game this season as he sat out with a knee injury.

With eight minutes left in regulation, Cheng scored for Sage Hill (1-4, 0-1 in league). But the Tartans, the defending league champions, would respond later.

In the Academy League, there are two non-sudden death, 10-minute overtime periods.
