MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

UC Santa Barbara invitational

SANTA BARBARA — UC Irvine senior opposite Carson Clark had 17 kills, 10 digs and five block assists to lead the No. 2-ranked Anteaters to a 23-25, 25-21, 35-33, 25-18 win over No. 3-ranked UCLA in the title match on Saturday at UCSB.

Sophomore outside hitter Jeremy Dejno had 15 kills and a .519 hitting percentage on his way to being named MVP of the tournament.

Clark was an all-tournament honoree for UCI (4-0), which also defeated No. 1-ranked BYU in the tournament, as well as No. 6-ranked Long Beach State.

Senior outside hitter Kevin Carroll had 14 kills and a team-best three aces, while sophomore setter Daniel Stork had 55 assists and eight digs for the winners.

Weston Dunlap, a Newport Harbor High product, had 11 kills and hit .529, while fellow former-Sailor Kyle Caldwell had six kills and hit .750 for the Bruins.

UCI returns home to open Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play against BYU on Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. in the Bren Center.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

UC Irvine 70, UC Davis 55

DAVIS — Junior Mike Wilder had 20 points to pace the visiting Anteaters, who won their third straight Big West Conference road game on Saturday.

Sophomore Chris McNealy, who made five of six three-point attempts, finished with 17 points and eight rebounds for UCI (6-10, 3-1 in conference).

Daman Starring had 12 points and five assists, while Adam Folker had six points and nine boards for the winners.

The Anteaters play host to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Thursday at 7 p.m.

Azusa Pacific 67, Vanguard 63

COSTA MESA — Christopher Raybon led the Lions with 17 points in the Golden State Athletic Conference game Saturday.

Chris Kupets and Cameron Nettles scored 16 points each for Vanguard (9-6, 1-3 in conference), which opened the game with a 9-0 run.

APU, ranked No. 9, is 13-2, 3-1. The teams were tied, 61-61, with 3:10 left, but the Cougars held on for the win. The Lions play at San Diego Christian Tuesday at 7 p.m.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

UC Irvine 60, UC Davis 54

IRVINE — Junior guard Anete Klintsone had 16 points and eight rebounds to lead the host Anteaters in the Big West Conference game Saturday.

Sophomore Jacquelyn Marshall had 13 points and 10 rebounds, while senior Kassandra McCalister chipped in 12 points, seven assists and four rebounds to help UCI win its second straight, both against conference foes.

It was only the second time in 21 games that UCI defeated the Aggies, the first time since 2006.

UCI had 18 assists with 23 field goals and shot 40.4% from the field, nearly four points better than UC Davis (8-6, 2-1).

Klintsone, Marshall and Methlyn Onogomuho had two steals apiece for UCI, which visits UC Santa Barbara Thursday at 7 p.m.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Vanguard 53, Azusa Pacific 52

COSTA MESA — Taylor Belmont hit two free throws with 10 seconds left for the No. 8-ranked Lions, who held on for the Golden State Athletic Conference win over the No. 11-ranked Cougars Saturday.

Belmont led Vanguard (9-3, 3-1 in conference) with 12 points and Maree Drennan added 10 points.

The Lions trailed, 27-18, at halftime.
