Former UC Irvine men’s soccer standouts Miguel Ibarra and Andrew Fontein were both selected in the MLS supplemental draft on Tuesday.

Ibarra, a senior midfielder who earned first-team All-American recognition and was the Big West Conference Co-Offensive Player of the Year in 2011, was a second-round pick of the Portland Timbers.

Fontein, the Big West Goalie of the Year as a senior last season, was taken in the third round by the Vancouver Whitecaps.

Ibarra had nine goals and eight assists in 2011, when he helped lead the Anteaters to the conference regular-season and tournament titles and an NCAA Tournament appearance. UCI finished 16-1-1. Four of his goals were game-winners.

Fontein, who had nine shutouts as a senior to give him a school-record 29 for his career, also owns the school career record for 50 wins. His goals-against average of 0.59 in 2010 is also a school single-season record, as are his 11 shutouts that season.

The supplemental draft, which includes four rounds, follows the two-round Super Draft held last week.

Ibarra and Fontein are the seventh and eighth players from UCI to be MLS draftees.

UCI alum Brad Evans is a midfielder with the Seattle Sounders.

Ibarra and Fontein will attempt to make the rosters of their respective teams, which open the MLS schedule in March.
