Youth scene: CMAC accepts the challenge

The Navy SEALs Challenge is meant for high school athletes, but the Costa Mesa Aquatics Club’s 10U and 12U teams accepted the challenge.

The kids ages 8-12 met the challenge and posted some quality times on Thursday. The polo players were told that their regular practice was going to be turned into the challenge and the kids showed up enthused and determined to finish and finish well.

The kids ran one mile, did as many sit-ups, push-ups and pull-ups in a two-minute span and then swam 500 yards.

Caedmon FIsher finished first in the run, Augie Cunningham was first in the swim, Kevin Johnson and Teak Zachary tied for most push-ups. Jay Morris had the most pull-ups.

Those who finished with 60 sit-ups in two minutes each were: Karis Couch, Kevin Johnson, Caedmon Fisher, Jay Morris, Torsten Bodenhamer and Jennifer Murphy.

All the kids were exceptional and completed the challenge. They all received T-shirts and certificates for their success.

The two teams are coached by former Costa Mesa standout water polo players, Cody and Dustin Serrano. Cody and Dustin said that they are amazed the athletes came out and gave 100% and that they could achieve such high goals. They are very proud of their teams’ determination, dedication and skills.

The CMAC 10U and 12U teams are very competitive and have won numerous games. The teams traveled to Malibu last month for the Ventura Cup Classic tournament. They are looking forward to compete in Winterfest, one of the biggest Club polo tournaments in Southern California next month.

Tar Heels improve to 6-0

The Newport-Mesa Tar Heels All-Net fifth-grade team continued its strong winter season improving to 6-0 with two road wins last weekend.

The Tar Heels beat the Irvine Bulls, 45-26, in Irvine and the Fullerton Cougars, 45-31, in Fullerton, keeping its record unblemished to start the season.

Ethan Barnes led the way with 14 points, eight steals and six rebounds, while Matt Olson added 16 points, two steals and two assists in the two wins.

Jake Hamilton (11 points per game, three rebounds per game), DJ Rodman (6.0 ppg, 4.5 rpg), Nico Dasca (6.0 ppg, 2.0 steals per game), Sam Barela (3.0 ppg, 5.0 rpg), Adam Flood (3.0 ppg, 3.0 spg), Luke Chelf (3.5 ppg), Johnny King (3.0 ppg, 4.5 rpg, 3.0 blocks per game) and Mason Melcer (3.0 ppg) all played big minutes in the wins and helped lead the team to victory.
