Costa Mesa Tournament

COSTA MESA – Newport Harbor High won the championship game, 7-5, over Sunset League foe Huntington Beach Saturday at TeWinkle Park.

The victory over the Oilers was definitely noteworthy. The Sailors have gone five seasons without a win in the Sunset League.

Junior Hattie Marshall was the winning pitcher in Newport's five games. She also had eight runs batted in over the five games in the 24-team tournament.

Jordan Blanchfield batted 13 for 19 and was joined on the all-tournament team by Marshall and junior Breanna Lopez, who played sterling defense in center field.

The Sailors (6-0) beat Segerstrom in the semifinals, 5-4, earlier in the day.

Junior Lauren Grady scored 12 runs in the tournament.

TUSTIN — John Davenport recorded a hole-in-one, while CdM teammates Chase Wheatley and Mike Moorhead shared medalist honors (one-over-par 37) to pace the visitors in the Pacific Coast League match at Tustin Ranch Country Club on Monday.

Davenport used a seven-iron on the 186-yard, par-three sixth hole on his way to shooting 38.

Brian Mull also shot 38 and Hale Furey shot 39 for Coach Mike Starkweather's winners (6-0).


Capo Valley Relays

CAPISTRANO VALLEY – The Corona del Mar High boys' team finished second Saturday at Capistrano High.

The Sea Kings scored 84 points, behind winner Capistrano Valley's 122.

CdM won the 200-yard medley relay with Ari Marks, Austin Beyaoju, Christian Garkani and Blake Motal finishing in 1 minute, 40.48 seconds.

Marks, Chase Reid, Jack Harryman, Ian Givant, Garkani and Motal finished second in the 300 freestyle relay in 2:11.96.

The CdM girls' team finished seventh and Newport Harbor's girls were ninth. Santa Margarita won for the girls' team title.

CORONA DEL MAR — Senior Hunter Molnar had four goals and two assists to pace the host Sea Kings on Monday.

Jack Ortlieb had four goals, Michael Keasey had two goals and one assist, and Aaron Khosh had a pair of goals for the winners.

Michael Ortlieb led three goalies with five saves.
