UCI’s Thurman deals one-hitter

Share

IRVINE — UC Irvine pitcher Andrew Thurman dealt a one-hit complete-game shutout as the Anteaters handed Cal State Bakersfield a 7-0 nonconference loss Friday.

The complete game was the fourth of the year for the right-hander, who struck out six and improved to 8-2 on the year.

The no-hit bid was taken out of the equation in the second inning as Tyler Shryock hit a two-out triple. Dylan Christensen drew a walk to extend the inning but Thurman kept the Roadrunners off the board, inducing a fly-ball out to left.

That would be all as Bakersfield was held hitless the rest of the way as Thurman faced four over the minimum.

The Anteaters gave Thurman plenty of run support. A clutch, two-out single up the middle by Dillon Moyer drove in Christian Ramirez to put UCI (29-21) on the board in the second inning.

The Anteaters added three runs in the third inning, loading the bases for Jerry McClanahan, who stroked a two-run single up the middle to highlight the inning.
