High School Roundup: Edison, Marina runners take on Mt. SAC

The girls' cross country teams at Edison and Marina are in the running for the 2012 CIF Southern Section Division 1 championship.

The Chargers and Vikings are among 16 teams competing Saturday (Nov. 17) for the Division 1 crown when the CIF Southern Section Cross Country Championships take place at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut. Both teams advanced from the Division 1 preliminaries on Nov. 10.

Marina qualified second in its heat and Edison qualified fourth in its heat. Senior Kylie Nishisaka led the Vikings, as she qualified second in her heat in 17 minutes, 41 seconds. Senior Haley Seward was the Chargers' top runner, finishing 10th in her heat in 18:35.

The girls' Division 1 race starts at 8:45 a.m. on Saturday.


Girls' Volleyball

Ocean View saw its season come to an end last Saturday in the quarterfinal round of the CIF Southern Section Division 4-AA playoffs following a 25-18, 25-12, 25-16 loss at top-seeded Saddleback Valley Christian. The Seahawks had advanced to the quarterfinals by sweeping Century, 25-17, 25-11, 25-10, on Nov. 9. Maddie Koci and Erika Jason both had 16 kills and Cami McNabb had 40 set assists in the second-round win.

Huntington Beach was eliminated in the Division 1-AA tournament on Nov. 8 by No. 4-seeded Mater Dei, which defeated the visiting Oilers, 25-23, 25-21, 25-14.


Boys' Water Polo

Ocean View's postseason run ended Saturday in the quarterfinal round of the CIF Southern Section Division 7 playoffs. The Seahawks were eliminated from title contention following a 9-7 loss to visiting Cypress.

In a second-round game played Nov. 9, Ocean View took an 11-9 win from Los Amigos. Cody Basford and Jordan Salgado both scored three goals, Glenn Baumann and Ryan Tran each scored twice, and Brian Smith had 15 saves for the Seahawks.

Edison took on top-seeded and defending Division 1 champion Mater Dei on Nov. 7, and fell, 21-10, to the Monarchs. Troy Oates scored four goals, Justin Harrison had three goals and Alec Niederland scored twice for the Chargers, who had defeated Long Beach Poly, 10-9, in a wild-card game on Nov. 6.
