Laguna NJB team wins tourney

The Laguna Beach Breakers Team 2 rolled to two victories Saturday in Division 3 competition at the Laguna Hills National Junior Basketball Championship Tournament to win the championship.

The Breakers started the day with a 54-34 win over the Laguna Hills Lakers to move on to the final. Nolan Naess scored 17 points and Jack Payne scored 14 to lead the offense. In the title game, Naess scored 16 points and Griffin Kristensen and Keegan Even scored 11 and nine points, respectively, in the Breakers’ 57-42 triumph against the Laguna Hills Timberwolves.

Laguna Beach posted a 10-1 record during the regular season to earn the top seed for the tournament.

The Division 3 champions are: Will Compton, Keegan Even, Griffin Kristensen, Henry Miller, Nolan Naess, Alex Neufeld, Jack Payne and Gavin Trevino.

Girls’ Division 1

Laguna Beach captured the NJB Championship Series title in its division in a tournament played the past two weekends at Huntington Beach and Westminster.

The Breakers started the series with a 41-28 victory at Huntington Beach. Nicole Davidson led the scoring for Laguna with 15 points followed by Kirsten Landsiedel who scored 11 and Sophia Lucas with seven points.

Laguna played a doubleheader Sunday and posted a pair of convincing wins. The first was a 57-41 decision over host Westminster. In the second game, the Breakers took care of Tustin, 37-19. Davidson, Landsiedel and Madison Sinclair turned in strong performances for the Breakers.

“The girls played their best basketball of the year in this tournament,” Breakers Coach Eric Lucas said. “Their pressure defense was fantastic and that led to a lot of easy baskets. A lot of these girls should help the high school team next year.”

The Division 1 champions are: Nicole Davidson, Taylor Glenn, Rachel Kenney, Kirsten Landsiedel, Sophia Lucas, Isabel Mansour and Madison Sinclair.

Little League

Laguna Beach Little League will hold official opening ceremonies for its 2013 season Tuesday at Riddle Field.

First pitch will be thrown by Skipper Carrillo and Aryton Garcia (Team Hobie) will play the National Anthem on his electric guitar.

The March 5 opening day schedule:

AAA Division: UPS vs. Crescent Bay Advisors, 4:15 p.m., Riddle Field.

Majors Division: VFW vs. Hobie, 6:45 p.m., Riddle Field.
