Briefs: Filia stars in CWS triumph

Edison High grad Eric Filia capped an outstanding performance at the College World Series on Tuesday by driving in a career-best five runs during UCLA's 8-0 victory over Mississippi St.

The shutout gave the Bruins their first national title in baseball as they swept the Bulldogs of the Southeastern Conference, 2-0, in the best-of-three championship series at Omaha, Neb.

Filia, who starts in left field, drove in the first two runs on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first inning and sacrifice bunt in the second. He had a run-scoring single up the middle in the sixth and finished with a two-run single in the eighth that took the score to 8-0.
