All-League Roundup: Olson earns first-team honors

Corona del Mar High junior Brett Olson made the All-Pacific Coast League first team in baseball.

Olson, a pitcher and first baseman, is one of two CdM players earning all-league praise. The other is senior second baseman Tyler Maloney, a second-team selection.

The Sea Kings finished 9-17, 4-11 in league, last place.

Olson went 3-2 with a 1.66 earned-run average. He struck out 24 in 33 2/3 innings and threw one complete game.

Olson hit .329 with 13 runs batted in, eight doubles and one triple. He walked 17 times and scored 14 runs.

Maloney batted .352 with five RBIs and one double. He played in the Ryan Lemmon Showcase, a senior all-star game between the Pacific Coast League and Sea View League.

Northwood sophomore Kevin Okuda was named the Pacific Coast League MVP.

Duo on first team

Costa Mesa High senior outside hitter Noah JeyaRajah and Estancia senior setter Joey Mittner are first-team All-Orange Coast League selections in boys' volleyball.

JeyaRajah led the Mustangs (2-13, 2-8 in league), who finished fifth in league.

Mittner led the Eagles (0-15, 0-10), who were last in the league.

Costa Mesa senior setter Andrew Wright and senior middle blocker Jacob Sperling each made the second team.

Calvary Chapel senior Cody Jackson earned the Orange Coast League MVP award.

Tars' seniors shine

Newport Harbor High senior midfielder Riley Peterson and senior defender Tyler Palmquist are first-team All-Sunset League members in boys' lacrosse.

Peterson and Palmquist helped the Sailors (6-12, 3-3 in league) finish second in league and reach the U.S. Lacrosse Southern Section South Division playoffs.

Peterson led the Sailors with 24 goals and five assists. He recorded 72 groundballs and won half of his faceoff draws.

Newport Harbor senior midfielder Ritter Hagadorn and sophomore defender Blake Lenk made the second team.

Newport Harbor senior midfielder Clay Smyth, junior midfielder Chris Buchanan, senior defender Nathan Frank, senior goalie Christian Ruelas and senior faceoff specialist Brandon Rausch were honorable mentions.

Smyth was also the Sunset League Academic Player of the Year.

Huntington Beach's Trevor Jackson was the Sunset League MVP.

Murray on first team

Sage Hill School senior defender Jay Murray received first-team All-Pacific Coast League honors in boys' lacrosse during the school's inaugural season in the league.

The Lightning placed third in league at 5-5. Sage Hill finished 6-8 overall.

Murray was one of three Sage Hill players recognized in the league. Junior midfielder Lucas Ellison and junior goalie David Swerdlow each made the second team.

Beckman junior Trevor Keene was the Pacific Coast League MVP.

Trio on first team

Corona del Mar High girls' lacrosse seniors Molly Rovzar, Paige Miller and Meredith Davin have been named first-team All-Pacific Coast League for the recently completed girls' lacrosse season.

Rovzar, an attacker/midfielder bound for the University of Colorado Boulder, led CdM in goals (62), groundballs (47) and draw controls (48). The team captain, who shared the league MVP award as a junior, also tied for the team lead with 26 assists and 16 caused turnovers. Rovzar helped the Sea Kings (13-8) finish tied for second in league and advance to the U.S. Lacrosse Southern Section South Division playoffs, where they were edged by Trabuco Hills in overtime in the first round.

Miller, an attacker, was third on the team with 25 goals scored and tied for second with 43 ground balls. She also had eight assists, five caused turnovers and controlled 15 draws.

Davin, a defender and team captain, was third on CdM with 14 caused turnovers. She had two interceptions, tied for second on the Sea Kings, and was fourth with 21 draw controls and seventh with 16 ground balls.

The Sea Kings' third team captain, senior defender Kylie Mulvaney, earned second-team all-league accolades, as did junior midfielder Kacie Kline.

Senior Angela Tulio of league champion Beckman earned PCL MVP honors.
