Two long standing annual summer prep football events get underway locally in the coming week.

The 2013 Edison Passing Tournament, in its 15th year, is Saturday at the Edison High football fields. Sixteen teams will compete in seven-on-seven pool-play competition leading up to championship play starting at 1 p.m.

This year’s field of competitors is composed of a strong group of teams, Edison Coach Dave White said.

“I think this may be the best field in the 15 years we have run this tournament,” White said.”There are some really good, talented teams competing this weekend.”

Among the grouping of teams is Gardena Serra, which won the CIF State Regional Division 2 championship bowl game by defeating Edison last December. The teams will face each other in an 11 a.m. pool-play game.

Serra won the State Division 2 title and is the reigning CIF Southern Section Western Division champion. Edison won the CIF Southern Section Southwest Division title. The field also includes CIF Southern Section division champions Long Beach Poly (Pac 5), Corona Centennial (Inland), and CIF L.A. City Section Division 1 champ Harbor City Narbonne.

Three of those Southern Section champions, Serra, Edison and Long Beach Poly, are grouped in Pool D.

Mater Dei (Pac 5 runner-up), St. John Bosco (Pac 5 semifinalist), and Valencia/Valencia (Northern semifinalist), also are in the competition.

White said that two players, senior Christian Heffelman and junior Matt Gane, will see playing time at quarterback for Edison. The two are stepping into a position held last year by the graduated Alek Torgersen.

Next week, the men up front take the spotlight in the 23rd annual Lineman of the Year Competition that will take place at Fountain Valley High starting at 3 p.m. Wednesday on school grounds.

Each competing school will field 10 linemen who will compete as a team in the following events: bench press, power clean, “Iron Man” relay, truck push, hurdle relay, and tug-O-war.
