Teams stay busy during summer

The Laguna Beach High football program went through a workout for the first time this summer on Monday, beginning preparations for its summer season.

The Breakers started seven-on-seven competitions with a four-team event Thursday at JSerra. In addition to the Breakers and host Lions, the two other competing teams were Canyon/Anaheim and San Juan Hills.

Laguna next week will travel to Irvine High for a four-team, seven-on-seven competition at 5 p.m. on Wednesday.

Corey Brown is in his first season as head varsity coach at Laguna. Brown, who was an assistant varsity coach the past two years and head coach of the Breakers’ frosh/soph program the previous three years, takes over head coaching duties from Mike Churchill, who stepped down from the position at the end of the 2012 season after two years at the helm.

“We had 30 freshmen show up Monday, and about 70 players, overall,” Brown said. “It went really well and I think the incoming class is the best I’ve seen since I’ve been here. The varsity had a great spring, and the players are picking up where they left off.

“Overall, the excitement has been great, and so has the effort.”

Baseball

The Breakers started their summer season this week with games at Ocean View and Beckman. The Breakers lost both games.

In their opener Monday, the Breakers fell, 5-1, to Ocean View. Zak Kovacic threw three innings and allowed one earned run.

Bair said that both Kovacic and Anthony Norelli “pitched well” in Wednesday’s game at Beckman.

“We have a lot of work to do but thankfully, it’s only July,” Coach Mike Bair said. “I’m confident we can get us where we need to be.”

Laguna again takes on Ocean View and Beckman in the coming week. The Breakers play host to the Seahawks on Monday and the Patriots on Wednesday. Both games start at 5 p.m.

Boys’ Basketball

The Breakers competed last weekend at the Concordia Tournament, where they finished with a 3-1 record at Concordia University in Irvine.

Coach Bret Fleming’s squad conquered three teams from Northern California, defeating Clovis North, Clovis and Selma. The Breakers dropped their final game of the tournament, losing in double overtime to Capistrano Valley.

In summer league play, Laguna won its last two games defeating Costa Mesa Monday and San Juan Hills on Tuesday.

The two wins put the Breakers at 15-4 for the summer.

“We’ve really had contributions from a lot of guys,” Fleming said. “Alec Wulff, Josh Adams, Bryan Ludloff and Matt Jones have played consistently well. Garrett Wong, Isaac Wulff, Darin Richardson, Max Brown, Spencer Wong and Sam Tehrani, all get minutes and are improving.

“The team is starting to understand what’s necessary to compete day in and day out. Playing eight games in six days drives home that point. The guys like each other and it shows in how they play on the court.”

Girls’ Basketball

The Breakers, who won three games during a recent, five-game stretch, start play Thursday at the San Diego Classic. The nation’s largest girls’ summer league tournament, which started in 1987, has 168 teams from around the nation competing in division play through July 21.

Coach Mark Lewis’ team will compete in the 2A bracket and opens the tournament against Seton Catholic of Arizona at 3 p.m. Thursday. The Breakers are part of a 2A Pool L field that also includes Bakersfield Graces Memorial, Hemet, Pasadena La Salle, South Torrance, Downey Warren and La Habra.
