High School Roundup: Eagles edge CAMS

FOUNTAIN VALLEY — Estancia High senior guard Celia Duran hit a three-pointer from the top of the key with two seconds left to cap a comeback from a five-point deficit in the final minute for a 52-21 win over California Academy of Math & Science in pool-play action at the Ocean View-Los Amigos girls’ basketball tournament on Thursday at Los Amigos High.

Duran had 23 points, including five three-pointers, with four assists and four steals for the winners (6-0), who won their two previous games in overtime by one- and two-point margins.

The Eagles, who received nine points and 12 rebounds from Michelle Simmons, as well as nine points, four steals and three assists from Maya Van Den Heever, play Pacifica in the semifinals on Friday at 7 p.m. at Ocean View High.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Corona del Mar 53, Aliso Niguel 49

FOUNTAIN VALLEY — Sophomore Krista Anderson had 21 points and 13 rebounds and sophomore Natalia Bruening had 20 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Sea Kings in pool-play action at the Ocean View-Los Amigos tournament on Thursday.

CdM (4-2) is 1-1 in pool play and closes out pool play Friday at 4:30 p.m. against Dana Hills at Los Amigos.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Estancia 2, Irvine 0

Katarina Freiberger and Samantha Falasco scored for the host Eagles in the nonleague game Thursday.

Estancia goalie Caitlin Leahy had seven saves to preserve the shutout.

The Eagles (2-2) return to action on Saturday, when they play the first of two games at the Best in the West tournament against Diamond Bar at noon at Bellflower High.

Corona del Mar 1, Trabuco Hills 0

Brianna Westrup scored in the 55th minute with a header off Shelby Brown’s corner kick for the Sea Kings in the nonleague game Thursday at CdM.

Goalie Kendall Mulvaney had four saves for CdM.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Corona del Mar 59, American 37

Junior guard Austin Ridge came off the bench and finished with 14 points and four three-pointers on Thursday, helping the Sea Kings reach the semifinals of their own tournament, the CdM Beach Bash.

The Sea Kings play Carlsbad Army-Navy in the semifinals on Friday at 8 p.m.

CdM’s Robby Bracho had 10 points and two threes and Kevin Fults added seven points.
