High School Roundup: Breakers on their way to league crown

The Laguna Beach High boys' volleyball team clinched at least a share of the Orange Coast League title Tuesday by again sweeping their way to victory, this time, against Calvary Chapel.

Laguna defeated the Eagles for the second time this season, winning, 25-9, 25-14, 25-14. Jake Hexberg had a team-high 10 kills, Jack Wyett seven kills and 12 digs, and Alec Wulff and Isaac Wulff had 15 and 11 assists, respectively, for the Breakers who improved to 8-0 in league and 13-3 overall.

Calvary Chapel fell to 5-2 in league and 15-4 overall.

The Breakers also won two matches last week by sweep, defeating league foe Estancia and Dana Hills in nonleague action.

Laguna defeated Estancia (0-7 league) April 24 by scores of 25-5, 25-16, 25-10. Hexberg and Wyett both had seven hills and Alec Wulff had six kills and 20 assists.

In a 25-21, 25-21, 25-23 win Friday at Dana Hills (13-8), Wyett had 15 kills, Hexberg and Jack Burgi 12 kills apiece, Noah Blanton had 10 kills, JP Wollam 12 digs, and Alec Wulff 48 assists.

Laguna, which has won its last 10 matches by sweep, this week took over the No. 2 spot in the CIF Southern Section Division 2 poll.

The Breakers took on Godinez in OCL play Thursday. The score wasn't available at press time.

Laguna will compete Friday and Saturday at the 32-team Redondo Union Varsity Classic. The Breakers open the tournament with a 3:30 p.m. pool-play match Friday against La Jolla. The Breakers are the No. 1-seed in their four-team pool (El Segundo, La Jolla, Santa Monica).

Next week, Laguna closes out OCL play with a 5:30 p.m. match Tuesday at Costa Mesa. The Breakers end their regular season hosting Esperanza, ranked fourth in CIF Southern Section Division 2, in a key, 5:30 p.m. nonleague match Wednesday.

Track & Field

Sweeping to wins April 24 against Godinez capped a perfect Orange Coast League meet regular season for the Laguna boys' and girls' varsity teams.

The teams both finished with 5-0 league records after the boys' team edged the Grizzlies, 65-62, and the girls' team posted an 85-41 win, at Laguna.

Laguna will go after the league title next week when it plays host to the OCL prelims meet Monday, and league finals Thursday. The prelims meet starts at 2 p.m. Monday. The finals start at 3 p.m. Thursday.

Boys' Tennis

The Breakers clinched at least a share of the Orange Coast League championship Tuesday by defeating host Godinez, 17-1, at Santa Ana Valley High.

It was a clean sweep in singles play for Laguna which welcomed back Chad Kanner who had been out since early in the season with a broken wrist. Kanner swept at No. 3 singles, winning by scores of 7-5, 6-0, 6-0. Zach Washer took 6-2, 6-0, 6-0 scores at No. 1 singles and at No. 2 singles, Ryan Gee won two sets (6-2, 6-0) and Anthony Morrell one set (7-5).

The doubles teams of No. 2 Tim Nguyen/Sterling Dudley Bowen (6-0, 6-2, 6-0) and No. 3 Hayden Seitz/Stuart Webb (6-0, 6-2, 6-1) also swept.

Laguna improved to 7-0 in league and played its final league match Thursday against Costa Mesa. The score from that match, as well as a Wednesday's nonleague match against Newport Harbor), wasn't available at press time.

The Breakers improved to 10-5 overall.

"The entire team played well and conditions were tough, as the on-court temps was near 100 degrees," Laguna Coach Don Davis said. "Going undefeated in league, and winning the title is a reflection on the strength, and competitive attitude of the team."

Laguna plays host to Palm Springs for a 3 p.m. nonleague match Friday. The Breakers will compete Wednesday and Thursday at the Orange Coast League Tournament at the Costa Mesa Tennis Center. The opening rounds of competition start at 1 p.m. Wednesday.

Boys' Golf

Laguna's John Grayden took medalist honors Tuesday but the Breakers were edged, 204-213, by Estancia in an Orange Coast League match at Mesa Linda Golf Course (par 35) in Costa Mesa.

Grayden led all scorers with a score of 36.

"Conditions were tough for the guys, as the winds were very strong," Laguna Coach Scott Finn said. "We played hard but came up short."

The Breakers, in third place in the league standings and 5-10 overall, played their final league match Wednesday against Costa Mesa. The score wasn't available at press time.

Laguna will compete Monday and Tuesday at the Orange Coast League Individual finals tournament at Skylinks Golf Course in Long Beach.


Laguna Beach senior Nathan Lancaster has been selected to play for the South in the 55th annual Brea Lions Club Orange County North/South Prep All-Star Charity Football Game.

The game is July 10 (7:15 p.m.) at Orange Coast College's LeBard Stadium.

The South roster was released Monday The team will be coached by Eric Lo, head coach at Huntington Beach High.

Ed DeAvila and Gus Martinez, both of Fullerton High, will coach the North.

The game's players and coaches were selected by the Orange County Sportswriters Assn. and Orange County Youth Sports Foundation.

Pre-sale tickets ($10) will be available for purchase starting Friday at participating Orange County high schools, or by calling the Brea Lions Club (714-524-3335). Tickets are $12 at the gate the day of the game.
