Police arrested two drivers early Monday on suspicion of racing at high speeds along surface streets in Costa Mesa, according to authorities.

Police got a call around 12:45 a.m. that a large group of cars was gathering in a parking lot on Sunflower Avenue between Hyland and Cadillac avenues, Costa Mesa police Sgt. Matt Selinske said.

About 20 minutes later, an officer in the area saw a Nissan 300ZX and an Infiniti G35 speeding at about 60 mph while racing each other on eastbound Sunflower Avenue, Selinske said.

The officer pulled over both cars and arrested the drivers on suspicion of street racing, a misdemeanor, according to police.

Both cars were impounded, Selinske said.

Police identified the suspects as Isidro Zuniga, 23, of Tustin and Jose Marchan, 20, of Anaheim.

Some industrial areas along Sunflower have been hot spots for street racing recently, according to police.

“It’s one of those word-of-mouth, text message, social media things that’s attracting people up there,” Selinske said.
