Volleyball legends part of inaugural class of SoCal Hall of Fame

Local volleyball luminaries Misty May-Treanor, Steve Timmons, Bob Ctvrtlik and Paula Weishoff are among the 25-member inaugural class of the Southern California Indoor Volleyball Hall of Fame, to be inducted at a ceremony in Anaheim on May 7.

May-Treanor, 39, a three-time Olympic gold medalist on the beach (2004, 2008 and 2012) was a former national high school player of the year who led Newport Harbor High to CIF state championships in 1992 and 1994.

She went on to twice earn NCAA Player of the Year recognition at Long Beach State, which she guided to the 1998 NCAA crown.

Timmons, 59, played volleyball and basketball at Newport Harbor High and Orange Coast College before helping USC win the NCAA volleyball title in 1980.

He helped the United States earn Olympic gold medals in 1984 and 1988, as well as a bronze medal in 1992.

Ctvrtlik, 53, a longtime Newport Beach resident, was the starting setter for the U.S. Olympic team in 1988, 1992 and 1996. He was named NCAA MVP in 1985, when he led Pepperdine to the national championship. He also played collegiately at Long Beach State.

Weishoff, a Huntington Beach resident, is considered the best American indoor player in history. She represented Team USA in the 1984, 1992 and 1996 Olympics.

She was the UC Irvine women’s head coach for six seasons, before returning to Concordia University, where she holds the same title.

Weishoff, a USA Volleyball Hall of Famer and former U.S. Olympic Committee Female Athlete of the Year, played collegiately at USC, where she was also an assistant coach. She turns 54 on May 1.

The SoCal Indoor Volleyball Hall of Fame will be at the American Sports Center in Anaheim, where the American men’s and women’s national teams train.
