In Glendale’s Adams Hill neighborhood, Halloween festivities include an art exhibition and a dog costume contest
A haunted horde of costumed, four-legged creatures will be on parade in south Glendale Saturday as part of a Halloween-themed art exhibit at the Adams Square Mini Park.
The event — organized by the Adams Hill Neighborhood Assn. with help from the city of Glendale Library, Arts and Culture Department — combines the reception for this season’s Art in the Park exhibit with a dog costume parade, where animals can compete for various prizes.
“The neighborhood’s been wanting to have a dog event for a long time,” said Rondi Werner, the association’s president. “When this opportunity came up, when we learned the art exhibit was Halloween-themed, we jumped at the chance to combine the reception with the dog costume contest that we’ve been talking about for years.”

The exhibit, on display in an old gas station turned art gallery in the mini park, is titled “The Haunted Gas Station” and comes by way of artist Bob Kathman. The installation is decorated with various Halloween items such as skeletons, pumpkins and Dia de los Muertos images, all tied in with a vintage gas-station aesthetic.
Kathman is an artist and teacher with previous work as an animator at Sony Online Entertainment and graphic designer at Whole Foods Market.
The installation will run through Nov.1.
Attendees can then make their way to the costumed dog parade to see who wins top prizes under categories that include “scariest,” “cutest” and “worst behaved.”
“I’m looking forward to being one of the judges,” Werner said. “I’m a cat person, so they are picking cat people who can be impartial.”
Cathy Hrenda, events coordinator for the mini park, said she hopes that people from all over will visit the Halloween-themed installation, a first ever for the gas station art gallery.
“It should be a good event for small children, and you get a lot of older people, too, around there who appreciate being in the community with lots of other people around,” Hrenda said. “We get a really good mix of people, some from parts of the neighborhood who would not normally find themselves around each other.”
The haunted Halloween art reception, with the costumed dog parade, will take place from 4:30 to 6 p.m. on Saturday in the Adams Square Mini Park, 1020 E. Palmer Ave., Glendale.
