Police are saying a Glendale man who killed himself by jumping in front of an Amtrak commuter train on Monday is also suspected of stabbing his estranged wife the day before.

Henrik Manokian, 57, reportedly slashed his wife’s throat Sunday evening, according to Glendale Police Sgt. Robert William. The assault took place at around 5:50 p.m. in Manokian’s car, then his wife escaped in the 3700 block of Mayfield Avenue.

After being found in the middle of the street by a passerby, the 50-year-old woman was transported to a nearby hospital for emergency surgery and is now in stable condition, according to police.

Authorities spent the rest of the night looking for Manokian, who had been living out of his vehicle.

At around noon Monday, police received word of a man who was struck by a train near the intersection of San Fernando Road and Doran Street. It was Manokian.

William said Manokian had told a man standing near the tracks that he was going to kill himself.

“As the train got closer, he ran in front of it,” William said.

Manokian’s death doesn’t mean the end of the investigation into his wife’s stabbing, William added.

“Just because he’s dead doesn’t mean our investigation there stops. We’ll still investigate it to prove that he’s the suspect responsible,” he said.

Manokian’s car was found parked nearby, and William said investigators are in the process of going through the vehicle.

Although investigators have not found a weapon or suicide note in the car, they did find blood.

“Blood was in the passenger compartment of the vehicle, and it’s how we learned where the assault occurred on the wife,” William said.
