818 Roundup: Invasive mosquitoes deemed L.A. County’s ‘biggest health risk’ found in La Cañada

Here are your local headlines:

• Asian tiger mosquitoes, one of three invasive species of the insect that have arrived in recent years in the Southland, were found Wednesday in a La Cañada neighborhood. The Greater Los Angeles County Vector Control District has called the mosquitoes “the biggest health risk in Los Angeles County.”

• Police on Wednesday released surveillance photos of a man suspected of using checks stolen from a Burbank mailbox to withdraw $1,900 from the victim’s account at a bank in Glendale, police said.

• A rug woven by orphaned survivors of the Armenian Genocide will be on display during a Sunday fundraiser to establish a local museum for historical relics.

• He was already known as a regular customer at the 7-Eleven on West Olive Avenue in Burbank, but now Pat Tucker is one happy customer after clerk Manjit Singh accidentally sold him a winning Powerball ticket last week worth $380,774.

• The track and field at Glendale Community College will undergo a major upgrade beginning next month when crews are expected to begin installing a new track and artificial-turf field, an improvement the college’s board of trustees unanimously approved last week.

• Though slightly down, enrollment in Glendale schools is higher this year than school officials had projected. With 26,119 students currently enrolled across Glendale schools, there are 63 fewer students than were enrolled at the same time last year.

• Ocean View Boulevard residents were on alert Wednesday after burglary suspects spotted by a neighbor led to the immediate capture of one man and the eventual arrest of a second in hiding, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

• The Flintridge Preparatory School campus was awash with excitement last Friday, not for the promise of the upcoming weekend but for the Thursday night coronation of senior Erika Winter as 2016 Rose Queen by the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Assn.

• Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Burbank), along with 35 members of the U.S. Congress, on Wednesday urged President Obama and the White House’s Office of Management and Budget to increase funding for earthquake hazards programs in the fiscal year 2017 budget.

• More than 240 students, along with faculty, staff and parents of St. Bede the Venerable School, on Oct. 21 put on bright orange T-shirts and hit the St. Francis track for the annual Jog-a-Thon.
