Surfer dies after being pulled from the water at Sunset Beach

A 46-year-old man drowned while surfing off 19th Street in Sunset Beach, according to Orange County coroner’s officials.

Eric Reno of Sunset Beach was pulled from the ocean at about 1 p.m. Friday and was taken to Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach. He was pronounced dead at 1:48 p.m., according to the coroner’s office.

Reno’s Facebook page indicates he was originally from Encinitas and had worked for Roofing Standards Inc., a Placentia-based contracting company, since 2008.

Details about what happened before Reno was pulled from the water were not immediately available.
