College Roundup: Vanguard baseball sweeps the Master’s to move atop GSAC

Host Vanguard University swept a pair of Golden State Athletic Conference games against the Master’s on Saturday to take sole possession of the GSAC lead with three conference games remaining.

With a 9-2 win in Game 1 and an 8-3 triumph in Game 2, the Lions (30-18, 18-9 in conference) take a one-game lead over Biola into three games with the Eagles (32-15, 17-10) on Friday at Saturday at Biola.

Vanguard, seeking its first regular-season GSAC crown, plays a single game Friday and a doubleheader on Saturday at Biola.

Brandon Sandoval and Michael Fuchs led the Lions offensively on Saturday.

Sandoval was three for five with two runs batted in and two runs in the first game, then went three for three with a home run and two RBIs, as well as three runs scored in Game 2.

Fuchs was three for five with a home run and three RBIs in the opening game, then was two for three with two RBIs in Game 2.

Tanner Perry homered and drove in two for the Lions in Game 2, while Josh Weeks was two for four with two RBIs in Game 1.

Shane Elias-Calles was a combined five for six with one RBI in the two games.

Chris Lumanlan improved to 8-1 in the opener. He allowed one run on seven hits over eight innings.

In Game 2, Tyler Steele earned the win to improve to 8-2.

Long Beach State 8, UC Irvine 2

Evan Cassolato was two for five with two runs batted in to pace the host Anteaters in the Big West Conference game Saturday.

Devin Pettengill was two for three for UCI (14-22, 2-6 in conference), which has lost 11 of its last 13.

UCI had six hits and has nine hits in the first two games of the series against the No. 12-ranked Dirtbags (24-13, 9-2), who have won 10 of their last 12.

The series concludes on Sunday at 1 p.m.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Orange Coast 5, Santa Monica 2

The host Pirates advanced to the California Community College Athletic Assn. dual team championship by winning the Southern California Regional title on Saturday.

The Pirates (18-2), winners of 11 straight matches, travel to Ventura College to face NorCal champion DeAnza on Wednesday at noon.

Karen Trinh, the Orange Empire Conference singles champion, as well as teammates JoAnn Taylor and Samantha Newhall all won in singles and doubles to propel the Pirates past the No. 4-seeded Corsairs (14-4).

Trinh won, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 2 singles and teamed with Clarisa Colling to claim an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles.

Taylor and Newhall combined to post an 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles.

Newhall swept her singles match, 6-0, 6-0, while Taylor won, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 4 singles.

SOFTBALL

Doubleheader

ATHERTON – Vanguard University wrapped up its regular season by being swept at Menlo in Golden State Athletic Conference play on Saturday.

The No. 17-ranked Lions, who won their first GSAC title since 1999, lost the opening game, 1-0, then fell, 6-2, in the second game against the second-place Oaks (31-16, 15-9 in conference).

Vanguard (42-12, 17-7) lost three of its final four, but will be the No. 1 seed in the five-team conference tournament, May 2-4 at Vanguard.

Cassie Ballswick was two for two to pace a seven-hit attack in Game 1. It was the second time Vanguard had been shut out in two days, after it went the first 50 games without being blanked.

Vanguard took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning of Game 2, but allowed two in the fifth and four in the sixth.

Taylor Wilson and Britany Heinle each had one hit and one run batted in to fuel Vanguard’s five-hit attack.
