High School Roundup: Newport Harbor defeats Corona del Mar, 12-6, in softball

Leah Freeman had a double and a triple to drive in four runs for the victorious Sailors (6-15).

Samantha Del Toro, Diana Surber, and Skialer Carter each added two hits in the win, with Del Toro picking up the win in the pitching circle.

Newport Harbor wins the Battle of the Bay on aggregate score (18-14) after the Sailors split the season series with the Sea Kings.

Corona del Mar took a 5-3 lead after a four-run second inning that was headlined by a home run from Sophia Rhee.

Mallory McCrane had two doubles as part of a three-hit game with three RBI. Rhee also knocked in three runs for the Sea Kings (10-9).

Lesly De La Rosa broke a 5-5 tie in the third inning with a single, and Newport Harbor led the rest of the way.

BOYS’ SWIMMING

Chino Hills Invitational

CHINO HILLS – Costa Mesa’s Aidan Blair won the 100-yard butterfly at the meet Saturday.

Blair touched in 52.89 seconds, and also placed sixth in the 100 freestyle in 50.10.

Teammate Misael Andino won the consolation final in the butterfly (55.80) and placed second in the 200 IM in 2:04.48.

Blair, Nick Ly, Andino and Jacob Petersen finished second in the 200 freestyle relay (1:29.81) and fourth in the 200 medley relay (1:42.75).

Ly was fourth in the 100 breast (1:04.57), and Petersen placed third in the 100 free (49.62). Ly and Petersen also tied for fifth in the 50 free in 21.95.

GIRLS’ SWIMMING

Chino Hills Invitational

CHINO HILLS – Costa Mesa’s Kendra Ferguson placed sixth in the consolation final of the 100-yard breaststroke on Saturday, touching in 1 minute, 9.14 seconds.

The Mustangs’ Lauren Kiefer was fourth in the consolation final of the 500 free, in 5:59.95.

BASEBALL

Huntington Beach 5, Newport Harbor 1

Nate Madole struck out six in six innings for the Oilers, who improved to 8-1 in Sunset League play on the road on Saturday afternoon.

Hagen Danner and Josh Hahn each drove in two runs for Huntington Beach (20-3), ranked No. 6 in the nation by PerfectGame.org.

Newport Harbor’s Cameron Mahaffy had three hits.

The Sailors dropped to 1-7 in league.

Costa Mesa 22, Saddleback 1

Jay Mann hit a home run, drove in two runs and scored four runs for the host Mustangs, who won the Orange Coast League game in five innings because of the 10-run mercy rule on Friday.

Cameron Chapman went two for four with six RBIs and a triple.

Costa Mesa (10-13, 5-3 in league) has scored 41 runs in its past two games.
