Locals impressed by Division 3 discus record

The biggest story to come out of the CIF Southern Section Division 3 Preliminaries was not produced by local athletes, although several had the opportunity to see it come to pass.

Track and field’s postseason kicked off with a thunderous throw from Oak Park’s Robbie Otal at Estancia High on Saturday afternoon.

Otal became No. 10 on the all-time California performance list with a mark of 209 feet, 3½ inches in the discus.

The senior’s heave shattered the Division 3 Prelims record of 199 feet, 3 inches, which was set last year by Esperanza’s Bronson Osborn (PR of 204-4 at Mt. SAC Relays in 2016).

“That was insane, but good for him,” Corona del Mar’s Mason Crane said. “It was incredible watching it with my own eyes. I hope to see more of that in the upcoming CIF track meets.”

Crane, a senior, earned the right to have an up-close-and-personal view of the action, as he took second with an effort of 166 feet, 5 inches.

In order to advance to the CIF-SS Divisional Finals, athletes had to place in the top nine of their event. For track athletes, they could automatically advance by placing first in their heat.

CdM pushed three more discus throwers into the finals next week, with Bryce Claybaugh (151-10, 8th), Amanda Cooper (113-8, 5th), and Simona Bocancea (112-6, 7th) advancing.

“Our coach always tells us to ‘seize the day,’” Claybaugh said. “CdM, as a group right now, we have four (throwers) in CIF.”

Costa Mesa’s Felicia Crenshaw demonstrated the separation that she has in being the prohibitive favorite for the girls’ discus title in Division 3 next week. The junior threw 147 feet, 7 inches, over 27 feet better than the competition.

Nothing would mean more to Crenshaw than to have her twin sister, Tayla, join her for as long as she can, as Mustangs coach Steve Moreno knows very well.

“I know coming into this that (advancing together) has been the goal from the very beginning,” Moreno said. “It’s a great moment for them to continue on.”

Tayla Crenshaw placed fourth with a mark of 114-8. She will need to add around 15 feet in competition throws over the next two weeks to approach the state meet at-large standard (132-3).

On the track, two similar outcomes told very different tales. One runner extended his season, while another appeared relieved to save hers.

Ocean View’s Ryan St. Pierre surprised many with a 14-second improvement on his career-best effort of 9:48 (at the Laguna Beach Trophy Invite) in the 3,200 meters.

Nearly two months later, the senior provided a shocking performance in what could have been the final race of his Seahawks career. His time of 9:34 was enough to take ninth overall and qualify him for his first CIF-SS Finals.

“I got anxious about the other runners because I knew that there were so many guys that were faster than me,” St. Pierre said. “All I can do is control how I run, and I just told myself to stay with these guys.

“With a lap to go, I just went for it, and I said, ‘Jesus, take the wheel.’ It was all God from that point. I’m so blessed.”

Disappointment befell CdM senior Raquel Powers in the 1,600, as she was passed at the finish line and became the first one out. The Michigan signee missed qualifying in the event by three hundredths of a second (5:13.06).

She came back with a vengeance in the 3,200, determined to continue her senior year. Still, she nervously watched to see if her time of 11:14.06 from the first heat would stand up against the remaining competitors. When it did, she leapt with delight.

“I just came back with a mission,” Powers said. “That was to follow the plan, to redeem myself, and to make sure that my season didn’t end here. I still have other chances to prove myself.”

Corona del Mar topped local schools with seven athletes qualifying for the CIF-SS Finals. Paige Damron traversed the 300 hurdles in 45.86 seconds to place eighth. Morgan Simon joined a litany of girls’ pole vaulters to clear 9 feet, 9 inches, the final height contested on qualifying day.

Ocean View’s Nicholas Elliot jumped a lifetime best of 6 feet, 1 inch to qualify in the high jump.

Laguna Beach’s Evie Cant (3,200; 11:22.51; 10th) and CdM’s Leif Hellgren (1,600; 4:27; 11th) narrowly missed advancing in the distance races.
