High School Roundup: Pacifica Christian Orange County girls’ basketball gets program’s first win

The Pacifica Christian Orange County girls’ basketball team posted the program’s first victory on Wednesday night, as the Tritons defeated host La Verne Calvary Baptist 46-14 in a nonleague game.

“It was very exciting to get our first ever victory in school history,” Tritons coach Brock Lewis said in a text message. “The girls have been improving every game, and they played very well today to earn their first big win.”

Sophomore Annika Bahnsen led the Tritons (1-2) with 16 points, and freshman Grace Cutrell chipped in with 13 points.

Freshman Anna Eddy added seven points.

The Tritons have steadily trended upward in their first three games. They scored two points in their first game. In the second, their scoring output increased to 17 points.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Newport Harbor 72, San Juan Hills 46: Junior center Will Harvey scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to the lead the Sailors in Wednesday’s nonleague game at home.

Dayne Chalmers finished with 19 points for Newport Harbor (7-3), ranked No. 15 in the CIF Southern Section Division 2A poll. Brad Siegel had 14 points and 10 rebounds.

The Sailors next play at home against rival Corona del Mar in the Battle of the Bay game on Dec. 21.

Corona del Mar 58, Long Beach Jordan 48: The Sea Kings advanced to the quarterfinals of the Charlie Wilkins Memorial Tournament with Wednesday’s win at Westminster High.

CdM (5-1) plays Orange Lutheran in the quarterfinals on Thursday at 5 p.m.

Edison 57, Yorba Linda 38: Senior guard David Atencio scored 19 points and Spencer Serven had 18 for the Chargers in the SoCal Elite Gary Raya Classic at Beckman High on Wednesday.

Edison (3-3) returns to tournament action on Thursday.

Costa Mesa 75, Katella 52: Junior guard Nico Dasca led the visiting Mustangs with 27 points in Wednesday’s nonleague game.

Osman Hefner contributed 14 points for Costa Mesa (4-7), while George Williamson had 10 points.

The Mustangs host El Dorado on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Corona del Mar 3, Trabuco Hills 0: Senior forward Kyle Mabwa recorded a goal and assisted on another, helping the host Sea Kings improve to 5-1-1 on Wednesday.

Niko Urban had a goal and an assist for CdM, and Rhyan Phan scored a goal.

Goalkeepers Campbell Sheppard and Walter Korbler combined on the shutout.

The Sea Kings play at El Toro, ranked No. 5 in CIF Southern Section Division 1, on Friday at 7 p.m.

Edison 1, Downey 0: Senior Jack Morrell produced the lone goal in the Chargers’ nonleague match at home on Wednesday.

Edison (4-1-2), ranked No. 9 in CIF Southern Section Division 1, travels to JSerra for a 3 p.m. game on Friday.

Estancia 2, Marina 1: Seniors Sergio Gutierrez and Andy Martinez scored for the visiting Eagles in a nonleague contest on Wednesday.

Estancia (3-1-2) plays at Mission Viejo on Dec. 22.

Laguna Beach 3, Ocean View 0: Sophomore Jet Rocha scored twice and Beck Kessler had a goal for the visiting Breakers in Wednesday’s nonleague match.

Laguna Beach (3-2-0) plays at Beckman on Friday at 3:15 p.m.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Edison 61, Yorba Linda 41: Senior guard Hope Nguyen had 15 points, seven rebounds and six assists for the visiting Chargers (3-3) in a nonleague game on Wednesday.

Junior guard Irene Ontiveros had a team-high 16 points, three rebounds and three steals. Senior forward Finley Garnett added 11 points, 15 rebounds, four assists and three steals.

Senior shooting guard Gabby Samiy had 11 points and seven rebounds.

Mission Viejo 47, Ocean View 42: The visiting Seahawks (2-4) were outscored 18-9 in the fourth quarter of Wednesday’s nonleague game.

WRESTLING

Corona del Mar 54, Beckman 28: The host Sea Kings recorded a total of eight pins in their Pacific Coast League opener, with five of those coming while CdM’s wrestler was behind on Wednesday.

Eric Rector, Danny Reichner and Chase Zanck each pulled off victories by fall after they were trailing in points late in the third period.

The Sea Kings improved to 3-3 overall.
