High School Roundup: Burzell’s hot third quarter sends Laguna Beach into Charlie Wilkins semifinals

Blake Burzell produced 18 of his 24 points in the third quarter, and the Laguna Beach High boys’ basketball team came away with a 63-49 victory over San Bernardino Cajon on Thursday night in the quarterfinals of the Charlie Wilkins Memorial Tournament at Westminster High.

“I just let the game come to me,” Burzell said. “I wasn’t forcing shots. My teammates were getting me good shots. I was getting wide-open threes and layups, so I was just getting good, open shots from my teammates.”

Laguna Beach held a 25-24 lead at halftime.

Charlie Rounaghi added 17 points for the Breakers (8-2).

Laguna Beach plays Panorama City St. Genevieve in the semifinals at 8 p.m. on Friday. The other semifinal will see Orange Lutheran take on tournament host Westminster at 6:30 p.m.

The championship game is on Saturday at 6 p.m.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Corona del Mar 3, El Modena 0: Ava McKenzie, Celeste Wayne and Ashley Maloney scored for the Sea Kings in the Sunny Hills Tournament pool-play game Thursday at Fred Kelly Stadium in Orange.

CdM (4-2-1), ranked No. 4 in CIF Southern Section Division 2, plays Diamond Bar on Saturday at 8 a.m. at Corona High in continued pool-play action. CdM coach Bryan Middleton said a win would send his team to the tournament third-place game at 5 p.m. Saturday, also at Corona.

Huntington Beach 2, Tesoro 2: Caden Heinrich and Gabby Rizzo scored for the Oilers in the Mater Dei Premier Invitational tournament pool-play game Thursday at Orange County Great Park in Irvine.

Huntington Beach (3-3-2), ranked No. 7 in CIF Southern Section Division 1, plays Canyon in its final pool-play game Friday at 4 p.m. at Mater Dei High.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Pacifica Christian Orange County 74, Webb 49: Sophomore point guard Dominick Harris finished with a game-high 40 points and 10 three-pointers in the Tritons’ San Joaquin League opener on Thursday.

Josh Griffith had 13 points and 11 rebounds for Pacifica Christian, which is 4-6 overall and ranked No. 9 in the CIF Southern Section Division 5AAA poll. Webb, from Claremont, is No. 5 in Division 5AA.

Pacifica Christian’s Josh Sims added nine points and 11 rebounds.

The Tritons play at home against Sage Hill on Dec. 22.

GIRLS’ WATER POLO

Newport Harbor 12, San Clemente 11: Annie Rankin’s power-play goal in the second overtime period lifted the visiting Sailors to a 12-11 win in a nonleague game Thursday.

Rankin led the Sailors (3-1) with five goals, and senior captain Jessica Lynch had three goals and three assists.

Sarah Barker, Kili Skibby, Karis Couch and Linnea Kelly also scored for Newport Harbor, ranked No. 10 in CIF Southern Section Division 1.

Goalie Erin Ross made seven saves.
