High School Roundup: Corona del Mar earns first win behind Bruening’s 31 points

The Corona del Mar High girls’ basketball team earned its first win of the season in defeating host La Quinta 54-45 in a nonleague game on Tuesday night.

Junior center Tatiana Bruening had 31 points and 16 rebounds to lead the Sea Kings (1-10). Junior guard Samantha Uehara added 14 points and five steals.

The duo combined for 17 of CdM’s 19 points in the fourth quarter.

Godinez 35, Newport Harbor 29: The visiting Sailors (5-6) were limited to their second-lowest scoring output of the season in Tuesday’s nonleague game.

Junior guard Lexi Alvarez led Newport Harbor with 11 points and seven rebounds. Junior guard Dessie Quinonez added five points, eight rebounds and four steals.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Costa Mesa 66, El Dorado 47: Junior guard Nico Dasca finished with 25 points for the Mustangs in Tuesday’s nonleague home game.

Costa Mesa’s Osman Hefner added 19 points and Tre Villalpando had 14 points.

The Mustangs return to action on Jan. 10, when they open Orange Coast League play at home with Calvary Chapel.

Marina 78, Segerstrom 44: Junior forward Jakob Alamudun led the Vikings with 18 points in their nonleague game on the road Tuesday.

Marina (7-3) plays at Dana Hills on Friday at 6:30 p.m.

Loara 68, Los Amigos 36: Sophomore guard Brian Pacheco finished with 13 points for the visiting Lobos in Tuesday’s nonleague game.

Steven Ruelas contributed 12 points for Los Amigos (4-6), which travels to Norwalk Glenn for a 6:30 p.m. game on Friday.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Laguna Beach 7, Trabuco Hills 1: Senior Carson Crushing finished with three goals, leading the Breakers to their fifth straight win at home on Monday.

Sterling Butler added two goals for Laguna Beach (5-2-0), and Jet Rocha and Jacob Pietig had one apiece.

The Breakers travel to Mission Viejo for a 5 p.m. match on Wednesday.

Corona del Mar 3, Brea Olinda 0: Matt Katz, Niko Urban and Chris Cruttenden each scored for the host Sea Kings in Monday’s nonleague match.

CdM (6-2-1) plays at Newport Harbor in the Battle of the Bay rivalry on Friday at 6 p.m.

Katella 3, Costa Mesa 1: The Mustangs saw their four-match winning streak end on the road Tuesday.

Costa Mesa (4-1-0) plays at Pacifica on Thursday at 3 p.m.

El Dorado 2, Newport Harbor 0: The Sailors’ three-match winning streak ended at home on Tuesday.

Newport Harbor (5-3-1) plays at rival Corona del Mar in the Battle of the Bay game Thursday at 3:15 p.m.

Huntington Beach 5, Dana Hills 0: Gabby Rizzo scored twice for the host Oilers in the nonleague game Monday.

Xolani Hodel, Julia Tran and Cina Wilson added goals for Huntington Beach (5-4-2), ranked No. 7 in CIF Southern Section Division 1.

WRESTLING

Los Alamitos 64, Newport Harbor 15: The host Sailors dropped to 2-7 overall after Tuesday’s Sunset League opener.

Newport Harbor juniors Dakota Mungall (152) and Austin Osumi (195) won their matches by pin. Sophomore JJ Perez (285) also won his match by a 9-6 decision.

GIRLS’ WATER POLO

Villa Park 11, Ocean View 3: The Seahawks fell to 2-5 after Tuesday’s nonleague loss on the road.

Ocean View plays host to Tustin in another nonleague game Thursday.
