High School Roundup: Niemand’s double-double leads Edison girls’ basketball past Huntington Beach

Senior center Ashley Niemand had 22 points and 12 rebounds as the Edison High girls’ basketball team earned a 56-34 Sunset League win at Huntington Beach on Thursday night.

With the win, the Chargers (11-8, 4-1 in league) are in outright second place halfway through league, behind only Los Alamitos (5-0 in league).

Senior Finley Garnett had 11 points, 18 rebounds, four assists and three steals for Edison. Sophomore Lainey Johnson added 10 points for the Chargers, who play Vista Murrieta on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. at Norco High as part of the Norco Extravaganza showcase.

Huntington Beach (13-7, 3-2) plays at Aliso Niguel in a nonleague game Saturday at 6 p.m.

Corona del Mar 60, Irvine 48: Junior center Tatiana Bruening had 27 points, 10 rebounds and seven blocks for the host Sea Kings in Thursday’s Pacific Coast League game.

Sophie Beador added 12 points and nine rebounds for CdM (7-10, 3-1 in league), which plays at rival Newport Harbor on Saturday at 6 p.m. in the Battle of the Bay game.

Los Alamitos 74, Newport Harbor 19: Lexi Alvarez had 10 points and eight rebounds for the Sailors in Thursday’s Sunset League game at home.

Newport Harbor is 7-10 overall and 2-3 in league.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Corona del Mar 5, Irvine 1: Kate Montgomery and Katharine Caston each had a goal and an assist for the Sea Kings in Thursday’s Pacific Coast League game at home.

Megan Chelf, Ava McKenzie and Kate Briggs also scored for CdM (10-2-3, 4-0-0 in league). Shannon Duss made four saves.

CdM, ranked No. 5 in CIF Southern Section Division 2, plays at Woodbridge on Tuesday.

Newport Harbor 2, Los Alamitos 2: Scout Farmer and Nicole Laz both scored for the host Sailors in Thursday’s Sunset League game.

Alyssa Sims had an assist for Newport Harbor (7-8-4, 0-4-2 in league), which tied first-place Los Alamitos (4-0-2 in league) in both of the teams’ league meetings this season. Los Alamitos is ranked No. 2 in CIF Southern Section Division 1.

Ryah Montano made eight saves for the Sailors, who host Huntington Beach on Monday at 5 p.m.

Fountain Valley 1, Marina 0: Senior Marissa Lynch scored for the Barons in Thursday’s Sunset League game at home.

Fountain Valley improved to 12-5-2 overall and 2-3-1 in league. Marina (14-4-3 overall), which came into the game tied for second in league with Edison, now sits alone in third place with a 3-3-0 mark.

Fountain Valley hosts Los Alamitos on Monday at 3 p.m. Marina, ranked No. 8 in CIF Southern Section Division 2, plays at Edison on Monday at 5 p.m.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Corona del Mar 2, Irvine 1: Christian Marion scored the game-winning goal in the 78th minute for the defending Pacific Coast League champion Sea Kings in Thursday’s road match.

Marion also assisted on Matt Katz’s goal in the first half.

Goalkeeper Campbell Sheppard played well for CdM.

CdM (8-5-1, 2-2-0 in league) hosts Woodbridge on Tuesday at 3:15 p.m.
