High school roundup: Bashore’s block keeps Newport Harbor boys’ basketball alone in second in Sunset

Senior forward Jake Bashore blocked a potential-game winning three-pointer in the final second, allowing the Newport Harbor High boys’ basketball team to edge host Huntington Beach 54-52 in a Sunset League game on Friday night.

Zack Swies made six three-pointers and finished with 18 points for the Sailors (18-5, 5-1 in league), ranked No. 13 in the CIF Southern Section Division 2A poll.

Newport Harbor’s Sam Barela had eight points, 10 rebounds and seven assists, and Dayne Chalmers scored 15 points.

The Sailors, who are in second place in league, play host to first-place Edison (6-0 in league) on Monday at 7 p.m.

Huntington Beach (2-20, 0-6 in league), which was outscored 15-4 in the third quarter, hosts Marina on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.

Laguna Beach 87, Calvary Chapel 18: Senior guard Blake Burzell finished with 21 points as the host Breakers improved to 6-0 in the Orange Coast League on Friday.

Nolan Naess had 17 points for Laguna Beach, which is 21-3 overall and ranked No. 3 in CIF Southern Section Division 3AA.

Grady Morgan scored 11 points, while Adam Armstrong and Brooks Hogenauer added 10 points apiece.

The Breakers host Godinez on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Corona del Mar 59, Beckman 53: Sophomore guard John Humphreys led the visiting Sea Kings with 22 points in a Pacific Coast League battle for second place on Friday.

Kevin Kobrine had 21 points and Jack Garza added 10 for CdM (14-8, 4-2 in league). The Sea Kings are a game back of first-place Northwood, which is 5-1 in league.

The Sea Kings are at home against University on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

Costa Mesa 81, Saddleback 48: Junior guard Osman Hefner had 28 points in the Mustangs’ Orange Coast League game at home on Friday.

Nico Dasca contributed 24 points, while Tre Villapando had 18 points.

Costa Mesa (11-8, 5-1 in league) remains one game back of first-place Laguna Beach. The Mustangs play at Calvary Chapel on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Ocean View 66, Segerstrom 59: Senior center Mehkel Harvey scored 23 points, grabbed 15 rebounds and blocked eight shots, keeping the Seahawks undefeated in the Golden West League on Friday.

Paul Head scored 20 points and Seth Mishler had 14 points for Ocean View (19-4, 6-0 in league).

The Seahawks, ranked No. 4 in CIF Southern Section Division 3AA, are at home against Loara on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.

Los Alamitos 59, Fountain Valley 36: The visiting Barons dropped to 8-14 overall and 1-5 in the Sunset League on Friday.

Fountain Valley travels to Newport Harbor for a 7 p.m. game on Wednesday.

GIRLS’ WATER POLO

Orange Lutheran 9, Corona del Mar 6: Chloe Harbilas and Layne Anzaldo each had three goals for the Sea Kings, who were upset Friday in a Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions quarterfinal game at Goleta Dos Pueblos High.

Sophie Wallace had two assists for the No. 3-seeded Sea Kings (13-3), and Erin Tharp made seven saves. Orange Lutheran was seeded No. 6.

Earlier on Friday, CdM earned a 14-2 win over Arroyo Grande. Harbilas had seven goals, while Wallace and Ella Abbott each scored twice.

CdM will play in the fifth-place semifinal game Saturday at 9:05 a.m. at Dos Pueblos.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Huntington Beach 3, Newport Harbor 0: The host Oilers handed the Sailors their first setback in the Sunset League on Friday.

Newport Harbor fell to 5-1-1 in league and out of first place, while Huntington Beach improved to 2-5-0.

The Sailors can get back in first with a win at home against Edison on Monday at 4:45 p.m.

Edison 2, Marina 1: Senior Zac Ingalls recorded both goals for the visiting Chargers, who moved atop the Sunset League on Friday.

Edison (13-4-2, 6-1-0 in league) is ranked No. 9 in CIF Southern Section Division 1.

Estancia 1, Godinez 1: Charly Segura scored for the visiting Eagles, who remained in first place in the Orange Coast League on Friday.

Estancia (10-3-4, 3-0-2 in league), ranked No. 5 in CIF Southern Section Division 3, plays at Saddleback on Wednesday at 5 p.m.

Laguna Beach 1, Calvary Chapel 0: Senior Sterling Butler had the goal for the Breakers in Friday’s Orange Coast League contest at home.

Laguna Beach (8-4-2, 3-2-1 in league) hosts Godinez on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.

Saddleback 6, Costa Mesa 1: The host Mustangs dropped to 3-2-1 in the Orange Coast League on Friday.

Costa Mesa is tied for second place in league with Saddleback. The Mustangs play Calvary Chapel at home on Wednesday at 5 p.m.

Segerstrom 2, Ocean View 0: The Seahawks got blanked for the second time in three days on the road in the Golden West League on Friday.

Ocean View (5-11-0, 0-6-0 in league) faces Loara at home on Wednesday at 3 p.m.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Sage Hill 61, Crean Lutheran 51: Freshman center Emily Elliott had 17 points and 15 rebounds for the Lightning in a Academy League road game on Friday.

Senior guard Kate Knollenberg had 13 points for Sage Hill, and senior forward Kenna Knollenberg added 12 points.

The Lightning (13-8, 6-2 in league) took a half-game lead over Cerritos Whitney (14-8, 5-2) for second in league.

Sage Hill visits Downey Calvary Chapel (5-17, 1-7) on Monday at 6 p.m.

Capistrano Valley Christian 24, Pacifica Christian Orange County 20: Sophomore Annika Bahnsen had six points and freshman Hailey McKay added five points for the host Tritons in Friday’s Express League game.

Pacifica Christian (3-8, 1-6 in league) plays host to Connelly (7-7, 4-2) on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.

Costa Mesa 49, Saddleback 43: The host Mustangs posted their second win of Orange Coast League play on Thursday.

Costa Mesa (6-10, 2-4 in league) plays at second-place Calvary Chapel (14-4, 5-1) on Tuesday at 6 p.m. The Eagles have won both prior meetings with the Mustangs this season by an average of 10 points.

Godinez 51, Estancia 27: The host Grizzlies completed the season sweep of the Eagles in Thursday’s Orange Coast League contest.

Estancia (8-12, 3-3 in league), which is in third place in league, remains on the road to face Saddleback (7-12, 2-4) on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
