High school roundup: Marina girls’ soccer moves up in Sunset League

Freshman Kaitlyn Paculba had a goal and an assist as the Marina High girls’ soccer team beat visiting Huntington Beach 2-0 in a Sunset League game Tuesday.

Senior Erika Sosa added a goal for Marina (13-4-4, 4-3-1 in league), which leaped from fourth into sole possession of second place in league behind Los Alamitos. The Griffins (6-0-2 in league) clinched the outright league title by beating Edison 1-0 on Tuesday.

Huntington Beach (9-7-4, 3-3-2) and Edison are tied for third place in league with two matches remaining.

Marina plays at Los Alamitos on Thursday at 5 p.m., while Huntington Beach is at Fountain Valley on Thursday at 3 p.m.

Newport Harbor 5, Fountain Valley 2: Alyssa Sims had two goals as the host Sailors got their first Sunset League win of the season Tuesday.

Sadie Pitchess, Haley Bullard and Skylynn Rodriguez also scored for Newport Harbor (8-9-4, 1-5-2 in league). The Sailors play at Edison on Thursday at 5 p.m.

Fountain Valley fell to 12-7-4 overall and 2-5-1 in league.

Estancia 3, Saddleback 0: Desiree Mendoza had two goals for the Eagles in Tuesday’s Orange Coast League game on the road.

Lexi Osso, Annalysa Cowie and Evelyn Hernandez also scored for Estancia (4-7-3, 4-1-1 in league), which plays host to Calvary Chapel on Thursday at 5 p.m.

University 3, Corona del Mar 0: The host Sea Kings suffered their first Pacific Coast League loss of the season on Tuesday.

Giovanna Broderick made two saves and Shannon Duss three saves for CdM (10-3-5, 4-1-2 in league). The Sea Kings fell into a first-place tie in league with Northwood (5-2-0 in league), with each team having 10 points. CdM, ranked No. 5 in CIF Southern Section Division 2, plays at Northwood on Thursday at 3:15 p.m.

Sage Hill 10, Calvary Chapel Downey 0: Freshman Lexi Van den Bosch and senior Taylor Magliarditi each scored two goals for the Lightning in Monday’s Academy League game at Apollo Park in Downey.

Anika Nielsen, Grace Robinson-Dorn, Avery Jeanneret, Michelle Hung, Ashton Carroll and Ava Cooper added goals for Sage Hill (10-6-1, 5-3-1 in league).

The Lightning play host to Brethren Christian on Wednesday at 5 p.m.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Corona del Mar 61, University 55: Senior guard Kevin Kobrine and sophomore guard John Humphreys finished with 20 points apiece in the Sea Kings’ Pacific Coast League home game on Tuesday.

CdM (15-8, 5-2 in league) outscored University 21-8 in the fourth quarter to stay in second place and one game back of Northwood (19-5, 6-1). The Sea Kings play at Northwood on Thursday at 7 p.m.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

University 59, Corona del Mar 39: Junior center Tatiana Bruening scored 12 points with seven rebounds for the Sea Kings in Tuesday’s Pacific Coast League home game against the first-place Trojans.

Junior guards Malia Halafuka and Samantha Uehara had nine points and seven points, respectively.

CdM (9-13 4-3 in league) visits Northwood (6-15, 0-7) on Friday at 5:30 p.m.

Saddleback 51, Estancia 45: The Orange Coast League rivals took turns defending their home court in the series, with the Roadrunners accomplishing the feat on Tuesday.

Estancia (8-13, 3-4 in league) and Saddleback (8-12, 3-4) are tied for third place in league with three games remaining.

The Eagles host second-place Calvary Chapel on Thursday.

Godinez 68, Laguna Beach 7: The Grizzlies (11-10, 7-0 in league) defeated the host Breakers (0-21, 0-7) to maintain first place in the Orange Coast League on Tuesday.

Connelly 34, Pacifica Christian Orange County 13: The host Tritons (4-8) fell for the sixth time in seven Express League games on Tuesday.

On Monday, sophomore Annika Bahnsen scored a team-high 10 points for the Tritons in a 31-24 nonleague win at home against Corona Crossroads Christian.

Senior Karen Munoz and freshman Anna Eddy added six points apiece in Monday’s game.

Cerritos Whitney 56, Brethren Christian 20: The Warriors dropped to 3-15 overall and 0-9 in Academy League play with Monday’s road loss to the Wildcats.

Brethren Christian plays host to Sage Hill (14-8, 7-2 in league) on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

Tarbut V’Torah 55, Liberty Christian 10: The host Minutemen dropped to 0-10 overall and 0-7 in the Express League on Tuesday.
