High school roundup: Newport Harbor wins Newport Elks Tournament baseball opener

Senior Matt Weiss threw 4 2/3 innings, striking out four and allowing one hit and one run in Newport Harbor High’s 9-1 win over visiting Long Beach Poly in a Newport Elks Tournament Foothill Division opener on Thursday.

Weiss improved to 1-1.

AJ Stefano went two for three with three runs batted in and two doubles for the Sailors (1-2).

John Olmstead hit a home run and finished two for three with two RBIs. Clay Liolios and Max Crabbe each had a hit and an RBI.

Newport Harbor hosts its second game in the tournament on Saturday against Valencia at 11 a.m.

Sage Hill 7, Santa Clarita Golden Valley 4: Junior Drake Mossman earned the win for the visiting Lightning in Thursday’s Newport Elks Tournament Orange County Division opener.

Mossman gave up two earned runs and six hits in five innings. He struck out two. He was two for four with three RBIs.

Justin Camp went two for four with two RBIs and two doubles for Sage Hill, and Matt King had two hits.

Ashwin Chona recorded the save.

Sage Hill resumes tournament play at home against Godinez on Saturday at 11 a.m.

Brea Olinda 3, Laguna Beach 2 (eight innings): Sawyer Chesley was two for four during the host Breakers’ extra-inning affair in their first game in the Newport Elks Tournament Costa Mesa Division on Thursday.

Next for Laguna Beach (0-3) is Saturday’s tournament game at Fullerton at 11 a.m.

Edison 4, Downey 0: The Chargers (2-2) opened the Loara Tournament at USC’s Dedeaux Field on Thursday.

GIRLS’ LACROSSE

Newport Harbor 19, Temecula Great Oak 2: Caroline Farley had seven goals and seven draw controls for the host Sailors in a nonleague match on Thursday.

Delaney Knipp also had seven draw controls for the Sailors (1-1), who play at St. Margaret’s on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.

BOYS’ LACROSSE

Tesoro 11, Huntington Beach 8: Donnie Schulte scored three goals for the Oilers in their nonleague season opener Thursday at home.

Tyler Alexander scored twice for Huntington Beach, which also got goals from Dylan McDonald, Shane Sandoval and Michael Goodheart. Grady Mercier made 10 saves.

The Oilers host Aliso Niguel on Monday at 7 p.m.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Edison 11, Long Beach Wilson 7: Jason You and Ryan Lum both swept in singles for the visiting Chargers in Thursday’s nonleague season opener.

Edison plays at Tesoro on Monday.

San Clemente 10, Fountain Valley 8: Justin Pham and Tommy Trinh swept at No. 1 doubles for the Barons in Thursday’s nonleague match on the road.

Justin Nguyen won twice at No. 1 singles for Fountain Valley (3-1), which hosts Corona del Mar on Tuesday.

SOFTBALL

Edison 10, Mission Viejo 0: Junior Jenna Bloom struck out 15 in a complete-game one-hitter in the Chargers’ season opener at home on Thursday.

The game ended in five innings when senior catcher Jayden McKeague’s double created the double-digit deficit to put the mercy rule in effect.

Bloom recorded all of her outs via the strikeout.

Senior third baseman Giovanna Liggett had three hits, including two doubles. McKeague had two doubles and three RBIs.

Laguna Beach 7, Santa Ana 0: Junior Emily Thomas struck out 11 to lead the Breakers in a nonleague road game on Thursday.

She added three hits at the plate.

Laguna Beach (1-1) also received doubles from Taylor Glenn, Madilyn Garwal and Cienna Wunder.

Bolsa Grande 19, Brethren Christian 5 (four innings): The Matadors scored five runs in the third and eleven more in the fourth to earn the mercy-rule victory over the visiting Warriors (0-2) in Thursday’s nonleague game.
