High school roundup: Lopez lifts Huntington Beach baseball to Newport Elks Tournament semifinals

Senior Nick Lopez hit a go-ahead three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning, and the Huntington Beach baseball team beat visiting Cerritos Gahr 8-4 in the quarterfinals of the Newport Elks Tournament Frank Lerner Division on Tuesday.

Lopez, a catcher committed to Abilene Christian University, went three for three with two runs.

Huntington Beach (4-2), which has won four in a row, plays at Tesoro in the semifinals on Wednesday at 3 p.m.

Josh Hahn and Luke Glascoe each hit a solo homer for the Oilers, who share the No. 9 spot in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 poll. Glascoe was two for three.

Jeremy Wiegman, Jordan Vance and Nick Morlett combined to throw four scoreless innings in relief. The trio only allowed three hits.

Corona del Mar 6, Riverside Poly 4 (eight innings): Junior Nolan Dunn hit a game-winning two-run home run in the top of the eighth inning for the visiting Sea Kings in Tuesday’s Newport Elks Tournament Frank Lerner Division game.

CdM’s Preston Hartsell, a USC signee, sent the game into extra innings with a solo homer in the seventh.

Tanner Ivey threw three scoreless innings and earned the win in relief.

The Sea Kings (1-2) resume tournament play at home against Riverside Martin Luther King on Wednesday at 3 p.m.

Marina 3, El Modena 1: Senior Ryan Marks threw a complete game, striking out seven with no walks and one earned run for the host Vikings in a Loara Tournament consolation game on Tuesday.

Marks, a left-hander, picked up his first win of the year.

Steven Casas had two hits for Marina (3-2), and Jyles Sellers and Jackson Roeder each drove in runs.

The Vikings face Cypress on Thursday at a time and location to be determined.

Edison 4, La Puente Bishop Amat 0: Junior Lucas Hansen threw 5 2/3 innings, struck out four and improved to 2-0 for the Chargers, who played in a Loara Tournament game at Bosyen Park in Anaheim on Tuesday.

Edison’s Connor Aoki was two for two with a triple, walk, two stolen bases and a run.

The Chargers (3-3) continue tournament play at Santa Margarita on Thursday at 3 p.m.

Estancia 23, Santa Ana Valley 1: Junior Nick Peralez got the win in the Eagles’ Newport Elks Tournament Orange County Division home game on Tuesday.

Estancia (4-1) hosts Downey Warren in the tournament on Wednesday at 3 p.m.

Costa Mesa 6, Cerritos Valley Christian 5: The host Mustangs improved to 2-1 in the Orange County Division of the Newport Elks Tournament on Tuesday.

Costa Mesa (2-3) plays host to Santa Clarita Golden Valley in the tournament on Wednesday at 3 p.m.

Katella 14, Los Amigos 1: Junior Elias Delgadillo went two for three and scored the Lobos’ lone run in the Costa Mesa Division game of the Newport Elks Tournament on Tuesday.

Los Amigos (0-3) is at home in the tournament against Norwalk Glenn at 3 p.m. on Wednesday.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Huntington Beach 3, Servite 1: Senior Mitchell Bollinger’s 15 kills helped the visiting Oilers win 25-19, 22-25, 25-19, 25-18 in a nonleague boys’ volleyball match on Tuesday.

Junior setter Aidan Knipe handed out 38 assists to go with 10 digs for the Oilers (8-0).

Senior libero Grant Guinasso had 17 digs, and sophomore outside hitter Sinjin Choi had four service aces.

Ocean View 3, Pacifica 2: Junior middle blocker Jackson Petrovich and senior outside hitter Khristian Nielsen each had 11 kills, and the Seahawks won 12-25, 25-16, 25-21, 22-25, 15-12 in Tuesday’s nonleague match on the road.

Junior setter Hunter Miller had 39 assists, 13 digs and six kills. Junior Devon Vu had eight kills and one block. Junior Kermel Anwell added nine kills and 12 digs.

Ocean View (2-4-2) returns home to face Godinez on Friday at 4:30 p.m.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Corona del Mar 14, Fountain Valley 4: Kyle Pham and Diego Fernandez del Valle swept in singles for the Sea Kings in a 14-4 nonleague win on the road Tuesday.

Jacob Cooper and Ryan Wessler swept in doubles for the Sea Kings (3-0), while the doubles teams of Tyler Hollander and Luke Muradliyan, as well as Bradley Amor and John Dick, each won twice.

CdM plays at Dana Hills on Wednesday at 3:15 p.m.

Justin Nguyen and Ryan Trinh each won once in singles for Fountain Valley (3-2), which hosts Irvine on Thursday at 3 p.m.

Laguna Beach 10, Mission Viejo 8: Andrew Johnson swept in singles for the Breakers in Tuesday’s nonleague match at home.

Mason Lebby won twice at No. 1 singles for Laguna Beach (1-1), as did Blake Hawkins and Kyle Herkins at No. 1 doubles.

The Breakers play at Mater Dei on Wednesday.

SOFTBALL

Costa Mesa 15, Santa Ana 2: Junior center fielder Katie Belmontes had two hits and three runs batted in to lead the host Mustangs in a nonleague game on Tuesday.

Senior catcher Haley Sheffner went two for three with two runs scored. Senior first baseman Brandy Rodriguez had three hits and two RBIs, and junior outfielder Natalie Torres also drove in two runs.

Costa Mesa (3-1) is at University on Friday at 3:15 p.m.

El Toro 6, Corona del Mar 4: Sophomore Sophia Skerik pitched five innings, but she took the loss in the Sea Kings’ nonleague road game on Tuesday.

Freshman Trasara Alexander drove in a run and stole a base. Sophomore Audrey Tumbarello added a triple, and junior Amerys Barshtak also had a stolen base.

CdM is 3-2-1 overall.

BOYS’ SWIMMING

Marina 112.5, Lakewood 54.5: Stuart Holton and Alex Papac were both double-winners for the Vikings in Tuesday’s nonleague season opener at home.

Holton won the 100 butterfly in 55.29 seconds and the 100 free in 50.45, while Papac won the 200 individual medley (2:05.39) and 100 back (1:00.25).

Ethan Chieng won the 100 breaststroke in 1:08.27 for Marina.

GIRLS’ SWIMMING

Marina 108, Lakewood 60: Sage Matsushima won the 200-yard freestyle for the Vikings in the nonleague season opener Tuesday at home.

Matsushima touched in 1 minute 59.90 seconds. Other winners for the Vikings included Madeline Sandstead, who swam the 100 freestyle in 57.10 seconds, and Terra Matsushima capturing the 50 free in 25.61.

GIRLS’ LACROSSE

St. Margaret’s 17, Newport Harbor 5: Adena and Joelle Rothbard each scored two goals for the visiting Sailors in Tuesday’s nonleague game.

Mariana Miller added a goal for Newport Harbor (1-3), and Willa Rath made six saves. The Sailors host San Juan Hills on Thursday at 5 p.m.

BOYS’ LACROSSE

Aliso Niguel 7, Huntington Beach 6 (double OT): Donnie Schulte scored three goals for the host Oilers in Monday’s nonleague game.

Jacob Chance, Michael Goodheart and Zach Varalyai all added goals for Huntington Beach (0-2), which got 10 saves from Grady Mercier.

The Oilers play at Mission Viejo on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

BOYS’ GOLF

Edison 190, Villa Park 241: Juniors Tony DiBernardo and Anthony Dao shared the medalist honor with even-par scores of 36 for the host Chargers in a nonleague match at SeaCliff Country Club on Tuesday.

Pete DiBernardo finished with a 37 for Edison.

Next for Edison (3-0) is a match with Mater Dei at Willowick Golf Course in Santa Ana on Wednesday.

Trabuco Hills 208, Newport Harbor 211: Junior Ethan Barnes earned the individual medalist honor with an even-par 37 for the Sailors in Tuesday’s nonleague match at home on the Los Lagos Course at Costa Mesa Country Club.

Newport Harbor’s Billy Shannon and Campbell Norris each had 42s.

Fountain Valley 210, Estancia 235: Kevin Hinh led the Barons with a two-over-par 38 in a nonleague match at Mesa Verde Country Club on Tuesday.

Josh Vo, Vedant Baiswar and Brian Can each shot 42s for Fountain Valley (2-2). The Barons play Servite at 3 p.m. on Wednesday.

Ocean View 232, Katella 253: Freshman Michael Kosai was the individual medalist, shooting a one-over-par 37 in the Seahawks’ season opener on Tuesday.
