High school roundup: CdM boys’ swimming beats Irvine in Pacific Coast League opener

Senior Ryan Schildwachter won the 200-yard individual medley and 100 breaststroke as the Corona del Mar High boys’ swimming team beat visiting Irvine 94-76 in a Pacific Coast League opener Wednesday.

Schildwachter touched in 1 minute 57.76 seconds to win the 200 IM, and 58.93 seconds to win the breaststroke.

High school roundup: In the March 14 Sports section, a roundup item on the Edison softball team had it with an overall record of 3-1. Edison is 4-1.

Sophomore Tanner Pulice won the 100 backstroke (54.78) and 100 butterfly (53.07) for CdM, while senior Davis Wong won the 50 free (22.37) and 100 free (49.44).

Laguna Beach 88, Calvary Chapel 74: Junior Colton Gregory won the 50-yard freestyle in 23.35 seconds for the Breakers in Wednesday’s Orange Coast League opener at home.

Gregory also placed second in the 100 free for the Breakers (2-0 overall).

Costa Mesa 122, Saddleback 20: Aidan Blair won the 50-yard freestyle and 100 backstroke for the host Mustangs in Wednesday’s Orange Coast League opener.

Blair touched in 23.31 to win the 50 free, and 58.46 to win the back for Costa Mesa (2-0 overall). Will Harrington was another double winner, in the 200 freestyle (2:02.56) and 100 breaststroke (1:20.63).

BASEBALL

Marina 3, Greeley West 2: Senior left-hander Ryan Marks earned the win for the Vikings, striking out seven while allowing three hits and two runs in six innings of a nonleague game at home Wednesday.

Marks improved to 2-0.

Jackson Roeder singled in a run and had an RBI sacrifice fly for Marina (4-4) which starts Sunset League play at home against Edison on Thursday at 3:15 p.m.

Saddleback Valley Christian 6, Los Amigos 4: The visiting Lobos dropped to 0-5 on the season Wednesday.

Senior Christian Santana went three for four with two doubles and two runs in the nonleague game, and Joseph Mena was two for two with two runs batted in.

Los Amigos opens Garden Grove League action at home against Rancho Alamitos on Friday at 3 p.m.

GIRLS’ SWIMMING

Laguna Beach 132, Calvary Chapel 36: Senior Kasey Karkoska and freshman Molly Renner each won two individual events for the host Breakers in Wednesday’s Orange Coast League opener.

Karkoska won the 100-yard freestyle in 54.36 seconds and the 100 breaststroke in 1:11.61, while Renner won the 200 freestyle in 2:00.64 and the 100 butterfly in 1:02.69 for Laguna Beach (2-0 overall).

Costa Mesa 119, Saddleback 18: Alyssa LeCours and Hannah Reese each were double winners for the Mustangs in Wednesday’s Orange Coast League opener at home.

LeCours won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:41.19, and the 100 breaststroke in 1:24.63. Reese, a freshman, won the 200 free in 2:21.11 and the 100 free in 1:01.04.

Costa Mesa is 2-0 overall.

Irvine 111, Corona del Mar 59: Freshman Michelle Tekawy was a double winner for the Sea Kings in Wednesday’s Pacific Coast League opener at home.

Tekawy won the 200 individual medley in 2:08.68 and the 100 breaststroke in 1:06.45.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Newport Harbor 3, Dana Hills 1: Senior outside hitter Cole Pender had 17 kills, and the Sailors defeated the Dolphins 27-25, 22-25, 25-22, 25-20 at home on Wednesday.

Newport Harbor, ranked No. 1 in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 poll, improved to 11-0 overall.

BOYS’ LACROSSE

Santa Margarita 7, Corona del Mar 6: Eric Fries had three goals for the Sea Kings in Wednesday’s nonleague home game.

Simon Hall scored twice for the Sea Kings (3-2), and Kyle Cord had 11 saves.

CdM plays Foothill on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Tustin High in a rematch of last year’s U.S. Lacrosse Southern Section South Division title game won by the Knights.

BOYS’ TENNIS

St. Margaret’s 11, Newport Harbor 7: Josh Watkins and Andy Myers swept in singles for the Sailors in Wednesday’s nonleague match at home.

Newport Harbor (5-2) plays at Sage Hill on Thursday at 3:30 p.m.

Esperanza 14, Costa Mesa 4: Devon Rogan won twice in singles for the Mustangs in Wednesday’s nonleague match on the road.

Victor Tran and Antonio Mondragon added a doubles win for Costa Mesa (1-4).

SOFTBALL

San Clemente 4, Edison 2: The Tritons scored three runs in the fourth inning to rally past the Chargers in a Saddleback Tournament game on Wednesday at William Craycraft Park in Mission Viejo.

Shelby Saffell and Mikaila Pancino drove in runs for Edison (4-1) in the second inning.
