High school roundup: Huntington Beach makes it nine straight baseball wins by edging Newport Harbor

Senior Justin Brodt went two for four with three runs batted in, leading the Huntington Beach High baseball team to an 8-6 win against visiting Newport Harbor in a Sunset League opener on Thursday.

Brodt’s RBI single and Nick Lopez’s RBI sacrifice fly helped the Oilers break a 6-6 tie in the bottom of the sixth inning. Defending league champion Huntington Beach (9-2 overall), ranked No. 8 in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 poll, won its ninth consecutive game.

Jag Burden, Josh Hahn, Cole Minato, Dylan Ramirez, Shane Stafford and Jake Vogel each had a double for the Oilers, who host Marina in a league game on Wednesday at 3:15 p.m.

Newport Harbor’s Max Crabbe hit a three-run home run in the top of the first inning. He finished two for four with two runs.

In the sixth, Newport Harbor’s Braham Duncan singled in two runs to tie the game at 6-6.

AJ Stefano and Clay Liolios had two hits and one run apiece for Newport Harbor.

The Sailors (4-4) are at home against Fountain Valley in a league game on Wednesday at 3:15 p.m.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Palos Verdes Peninsula 10, Corona del Mar 8: Kyle Pham and Diego Fernandez del Valle both won twice in singles for the Sea Kings in Thursday’s nonleague road match.

The doubles teams of Will Pellegrini and Bradley Amor, as well as Ryan Wessler and Jacob Cooper, each won twice for the Sea Kings (5-1), ranked No. 5 in CIF Southern Section Division 1.

Peninsula (8-0) is No. 2 in Division 1.

CdM opens Pacific Coast League play at home against Beckman on Tuesday at 3 p.m.

Fountain Valley 16, Mater Dei 2: Singles players Justin Nguyen and Ben Nguyen each won twice for the Barons before they were subbed out of Thursday’s nonleague home match.

Fountain Valley (5-2), ranked No. 5 in CIF Southern Section Division 2, hosts Beckman on Monday at 3 p.m.

BOYS’ LACROSSE

Edison 17, Temecula Chaparral 8: Drake Choi had five goals and two assists for the visiting Chargers in a nonleague game Thursday.

Dominic Rehak scored twice, while goalkeeper Hunter Whalen made 15 saves.

The Chargers (2-2) play at Aliso Niguel on Saturday at 2 p.m.

BOYS’ GOLF

Edison 187, Newport Harbor 207: Junior Anthony Dao earned individual medalists honors by shooting one-under-par 35 in a Sunset League opener for the undefeated Chargers at SeaCliff Country Club on Thursday.

Pete DeBernardo finished with a 37 for Edison, which improved to 7-0 overall. Tiger Tahvildari and Tony DiBernardo had 38s.

Newport Harbor’s Campbell Norris shot a 38 and Ethan Barnes a 39.

Ocean View 235, Westminster 322: Seahawks freshman Michael Kosai was the individual medalist with a one-over-par 37 in Thursday’s match at Mile Square Golf Course.

Ocean View is 3-0.

SOFTBALL

Katella 15, Costa Mesa 14: Katie Belmontes went three for three with a home run and four RBIs for the host Mustangs in a Savanna Showcase game on Thursday.

Hailie Salyer had two hits and two RBIs. Haley Wolf had three hits and Haley Sheffner added two hits.

On Saturday, the Mustangs (3-3) will take on Century at 9 a.m. and Los Amigos at 3 p.m. in the Costa Mesa Tournament at TeWinkle Park.

Estancia 104, Samueli Academy 20: The Eagles opened the season at home on Thursday.

Estancia will compete in the Laguna Beach Trophy Invitational on Saturday.

Estancia 63, Samueli Academy 23: The host Eagles started the season with a nonleague meet on Thursday.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Saddleback Valley Christian 3, Pacifica Christian Orange County 0: Tritons senior Josh Griffith finished with three kills and three service aces, but the visiting Warriors swept the San Joaquin League match 25-10, 25-11, 25-14 on Thursday.

Caleb Snyder had six assists for Pacifica Christian.
