High school roundup: John Olmstead’s 10th-inning walk-off homer lifts Newport Harbor to win over Fountain Valley

Junior John Olmstead hit a walk-off solo home run in the bottom of the 10th inning, lifting the Newport Harbor High baseball team to a 2-1 extra-inning upset of visiting Fountain Valley, ranked No. 6 in the CIF Southern Section Division 2 poll, in Tuesday’s Sunset League game.

Newport Harbor’s Cameron Mahaffy and Fountain Valley’s Jackson Ouellette turned in strong outings. Mahaffy went eight innings, giving up an unearned run and four hits while striking out six, and Ouellette fanned four and allowed two hits in 5 1/3 scoreless innings.

Kelly Austin struck out three in two innings and got the win for the Sailors (5-4, 1-1 in league).

Fountain Valley’s Shea Adame and Cedric Perez each went two for four.

The Sailors host Edison in a league game on Friday at 3:15 p.m., while the Barons (6-4, 1-1) play at home against Huntington Beach on Wednesday at 2:45 p.m.

Huntington Beach 7, Marina 6: Josh Hahn, a junior committed to UCLA, blasted a two-run home run to give the host Oilers the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning of Tuesday’s Sunset League game.

Hahn, who finished three for four with a double and two runs, Nick Lopez and Justin Brodt rallied Huntington Beach (10-2, 2-0 in league), ranked No. 5 in CIF Southern Section Division 1, late. With two outs in the fifth, Lopez drove in three runs with a double and Brodt singled in a run to cut Marina’s lead to 6-4.

Dylan Holt, Steven Casas and Cory Lewis each homered for Marina (5-5, 1-1).

The Vikings host Los Alamitos in league on Friday at 3:15 p.m.

Laguna Beach 25, Saddleback 0 (four innings): Jack Loechner, Kent Cebreros and Remy Mackel combined to throw a no-hitter for the Breakers in an Orange Coast League road game that was called after four innings Tuesday because of the mercy rule.

Laguna Beach’s Grady Morgan was a double away from hitting for the cycle. He was three for three with three runs batted in.

The Breakers (6-4, 2-0 in league) travel to Godinez for a league game at 3:30 p.m. on Friday.

Corona del Mar 13, University 5: UCLA-bound senior J.T. Schwartz homered twice and drove in four runs to lead the visiting Sea Kings in a Pacific Coast League game on Tuesday.

Schwartz, Chazz Martinez, Luc Stuka and Reece Berger had three hits apiece for CdM (3-5, 1-1 in league), which hosts Northwood on Friday at 3:30 p.m.

Crean Lutheran 3, Sage Hill 0: Junior Drake Mossman recorded two of the three hits for the Lightning in an Academy League opener at home Tuesday.

Sage Hill (6-3 overall) plays a league contest at Oxford Academy on April 3.

Ocean View 5, Loara 1: Gavin Kennedy earned the win after giving up one earned run on two hits and striking out five in the host Seahawks’ Golden West League game on Tuesday.

Kennedy also doubled and drove in a run for Ocean View (6-5, 1-1 in league), which resumes league play at Westminster on Friday at 3:15 p.m.

Garden Grove 10, Los Amigos 2: Sophomore Juan Contreras had a hit and a walk for the visiting Lobos in a Garden Grove League game on Tuesday.

Los Amigos (0-7, 0-2 in league) faces Bolsa Grande on the road Friday at 3 p.m.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Huntington Beach 3, Trabuco Hills 1: Long Beach State signee Mitchell Bollinger had a team-high 21 kills, and the visiting Oilers defeated Trabuco Hills 25-20, 25-20, 22-25, 25-19 in a nonleague match on Tuesday.

The Oilers (16-3), ranked No. 7 in the CIF Southern Section’s Division 1 poll, bounced back from a straight-sets defeat to Corona del Mar in the Orange County Championships.

Senior opposite Hunter Dickey added 14 kills. Senior libero Grant Guinasso had 14 digs, junior setter Aidan Knipe handed out 42 assists, and senior middle blocker Ryan Bevington chipped in with four blocks.

Huntington Beach opens Sunset League action with a home match against top-ranked Newport Harbor (16-0) on Friday at 5:45 p.m.

La Quinta 3, Ocean View 0: The Seahawks fell for the third time in four tries, as the visiting Aztecs recorded a 26-24, 25-21, 25-18 sweep in Tuesday’s nonleague match.

Ocean View (3-6-3) begins Golden West League play on Friday at Segerstrom (0-8). First serve is at 4:30 p.m.

SOFTBALL

Marina 7, Brea Olinda 0: Vikings sophomore Emily Rush threw six shutout innings to improve her record to 5-3 in Tuesday’s nonleague game at home.

Julia Carreon preserved the shutout for the Vikings (6-3) with a perfect seventh inning.

Thursday’s game against Mission Viejo has been rescheduled to Monday at 3:15 p.m. due to impending rain.

Eastside Christian 15, Brethren Christian 3: The Warriors dropped to 0-8 after Tuesday’s nonleague game at home.

BOYS’ SWIMMING

Edison 119, Marina 51: Taylor Whitmore won the 200-yard individual medley and the 100 backstroke for the Chargers in a Sunset League meet on the road Tuesday.

Whitmore touched in 2 minutes, 6.11 seconds in the IM and 56.01 seconds in the backstroke for the Chargers (1-1 in league). Marcus Dalija also won twice for Edison, in the 100 breaststroke (1:02.94) and the 200 freestyle (1:52.56).

Stuart Holton won the 50 free in 23.15 and the 100 butterfly in 54.78 for Marina (0-1).

GIRLS’ SWIMMING

Edison 89, Marina 81: Danny Gillissen won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1 minute, 14.93 seconds for the visiting Chargers in Tuesday’s Sunset League meet.

Katie Lightle was second in the 200 free and 100 backstroke for Edison (1-1 in league).

Terra Matsushima won the 100 back in 59.43 seconds and the 100 free in 54.00 for Marina (0-1). Madeline Sandstead won the 200 IM in 2:17.54 and the 100 butterfly in 1:02.84 for the Vikings, while Sage Matsushima captured the 200 free (1:58.80) and the 500 free (5:18.54).

BOYS’ LACROSSE

Corona del Mar 12, Los Alamitos 8: Chandler Fincher and Aidan Kelly each scored three goals for the Sea Kings in Tuesday’s nonleague game at home.

Simon Hall had two goals for CdM (6-3), and Kyle Cord made 10 saves as the Sea Kings snapped a three-game losing streak.

CdM hosts Granite Bay on Monday at 6 p.m. at Orange Coast College.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Corona del Mar 16, Beckman 2: Kyle Pham and Bradley Amor swept in singles for the Sea Kings in Tuesday’s Pacific Coast League opener at home.

Jacob Cooper and Ryan Wessler swept in doubles for the Sea Kings (6-1 overall), ranked No. 5 in CIF Southern Section Division 1.

CdM plays at top-ranked University on Thursday at 3:15 p.m.

Dana Hills 11, Laguna Beach 7: Mason Lebby swept in singles for the Breakers in Tuesday’s nonleague match on the road.

Andrew Johnson won a pair of singles sets for Laguna Beach (2-4).

GIRLS’ LACROSSE

Newport Harbor 15, Esperanza 10: Joelle Rothbard scored four goals for the host Sailors in Tuesday’s nonleague game.

Caroline Farley and Delaney Knipp each scored three goals for Newport Harbor (3-5), and Willa Rath made three saves.

The Sailors play at rival Corona del Mar in the Battle of the Bay game on Friday at 4:45 p.m.

Edison 14, Tustin 4: Sarah Boyd scored four goals for the Chargers in Tuesday’s nonleague game on the road.

Hannah Darrow, Lauryn Atencio, Alyssa Wyman and Keena Colamonico each scored twice for Edison (4-2).

BOYS’ GOLF

Corona del Mar 194, Beckman 197: Junior TJ Jenkins earned individual medalist honors by firing a two-under-par 33 in the Sea Kings’ Pacific Coast League opener at Newport Beach Country Club on Tuesday.

Jenkins recorded three birdies.

Guy Clauss finished with a 36 for CdM (4-1 overall), followed by 41s by Zach Glabman and Will LaBeau. Lawrence Shih had a 43.

Edison 189, Marina 208: The Chargers stayed undefeated behind one-over-par 36s from sophomore Tiger Tahvildari and junior Tony DiBernardo, who shared the medalist honors in the Sunset League match at Meadowlark Golf Club on Tuesday.

Chargers are 8-0 overall and 2-0 in league.

Ocean View 210, Santa Ana Valley 219: Reilly Kells helped the Seahawks improve to 4-0 at David L. Baker Golf Course on Tuesday.

Los Alamitos 198, Fountain Valley 205: Josh Vo, Kevin Hinh and Vedant Baiswar each shot a two-over-par 39 in the Barons’ Sunset League match at Navy Golf Course in Cypress on Tuesday.
