High School Roundup: Los Amigos edges Dana Hills in football opener

Junior Adolfo Chavez scored the go-ahead touchdown with 2:30 remaining, and the Los Amigos High football team opened the season with a 19-17 win at Dana Hills on Friday.

Senior Brandon Tinoco threw for three touchdowns with one interception. The game-winning score came on a 15-yard fade route to the back-left corner of the end zone.

Chavez had two touchdown receptions, with junior running back Brian Pacheco providing the other.

“It’s pretty exciting,” Lobos coach Carl Agnew said. “We’re hoping the kids have turned the corner. It’s Game 1, so we can’t really say they have for sure. This a great start to the year. We’re hoping we’re going to get better from Game 1 to Game 2.”

The teams have met in three consecutive seasons, with Friday’s opener marking the Lobos’ first win against the Dolphins in that span.

Hollywood South Broward 40, Marina 28: Sophomore quarterback Jack Miller threw for 174 yards and two touchdowns, but the Vikings dropped their opener Friday in Key West, Fla.

Senior receiver Nathan Pendleton had three catches for 89 yards and a touchdown. Senior running back Richard Rojes had three catches for 47 yards and a touchdown.

Junior running back Pharoah Rush had 15 carries for 55 yards and a touchdown. Sophomore running back Brantt Riederich added six carries for 42 yards.

San Gabriel Gabrielino 37, Costa Mesa 6: The Mustangs lost their season opener Friday night at Gabrielino High.

The game was the debut of Costa Mesa coach David Gutierrez, the former defensive coordinator at Santa Ana High.

Costa Mesa returns to action Aug. 24 with a home game against Santiago.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Edison 3, El Dorado 1: Senior outside hitter Samantha Schofield had a team-high 17 kills, and the visiting Chargers came away with a 25-14, 22-25, 25-12, 25-21 nonleague victory on Friday night.

Junior outside hitter Nikki Logan added 13 kills, and senior setter Aly Fullbright had 27 assists.

Edison improved to 6-3 overall.

Pacifica Christian Orange County 3, Samueli Academy 1: Casie Carlson had 11 kills to lead the host Tritons to a 25-12, 28-26, 19-25, 25-23 season-opening win on Friday.

Breck Burwell and Emma Hammond each had eight kills for the Tritons. Allyson Sharrer, Carly Kane and Anna Eddy each had six service aces, and Grace Cutrell had 17 digs.
