Week 8 High School Football Preview: Marina vs. Huntington Beach

Key Vikings: Sr. QB-DB Ian Green (47 of 87 passing for 874 yards, 10 TDs and five INTs; 81 carries for 287 yards and three TDs; 18 tackles); Sr. RB-SS Blaine Riederich (57 carries for 341 yards and seven TDs; 11 catches for 254 yards and three TDs; 39 tackles, two forced fumbles, one sack); Sr. RB-SS Brandon Savea (48 carries for 337 yards and one TD; 11 catches for 142 yards and two TDs; 37 tackles, two INTs)

Key Oilers: Jr. QB-FS Arick McLawyer (19 of 31 passing for 223 yards, seven TDs and three INTs; 50 carries for 186 yards and three TDs; 19 catches for 231 yards and two TDs; 32 tackles, two INTs, one forced fumble, one blocked field goal); Jr. WR-CB Jeremiah Flanagan (24 catches for 389 yards and six TDs; 13 tackles, two INTs, one sack); Jr. MLB John Gosney (64 tackles, six sacks, three fumble recoveries, two forced fumbles, one blocked punt)

Breakdown: With Edison and Los Alamitos likely to pull away from the pack, the four remaining teams in the Sunset League see those games against each other as must-win games. That is definitely the case in this game, as Huntington Beach and Marina both enter the week with their overall records below the .500 mark … The Oilers (2-5, 1-1 in league) have opted to keep their best playmaker at quarterback in dual-threat junior Arick McLawyer. His legs were a big factor in extending plays in the Oilers’ 21-14 win over Fountain Valley last week. The strength of the Huntington Beach defense is in the secondary. That could pose problems for Marina quarterback Ian Green, who has completed just 54 percent of his passes … Marina (3-4, 0-2) can bring pressure, as 12 players have combined for 17 sacks. The Vikings have a loss against Fountain Valley, and they end the season against reigning CIF Southern Section Division 3 champion Edison, so it is now or never for Marina … Huntington Beach won last year’s meeting 39-21.
