Newport Beach tennis standouts Kratzer, Boserup compete at U.S. Open for first time

It was one and done for Newport Beach tennis players Ashley Kratzer and Julia Boserup at the U.S. Open in New York.

Kratzer lost in the first round of women’s singles, 6-1, 6-1 on Wednesday to Tatjana Maria of Germany. Boserup also lost in the first round, 6-2, 6-2, to Aliaksandra Sasnovich of Belarus on Monday.

Kratzer, 18, was making her first Grand Slam appearance. She qualified for the main draw as a wild card after winning the United States Tennis Assn. Girls’ 18s National Championships on Aug. 13 in San Diego. Maria moves on to play No. 15-seeded Madison Keys of the United States in the second round.

Boserup, 25, is ranked No. 115 in the world. She was also appearing in the main draw of the U.S. Open for the first time. Her best career Grand Slam result remains making it to the third round of Wimbledon last year.

Boserup starts U.S. Open women’s doubles action with partner Nicole Gibbs of the Orange County Breakers on Thursday. Boserup and Gibbs play against Francesca Schiavone of Italy and Naomi Osaka of Japan in the round of 64.
