CdM’s Paulsen, Fernandez del Valle win twice in Ojai

OJAI --- The Corona del Mar High boys’ doubles team of Matt Paulsen and Diego Fernandez del Valle won twice Thursday to advance in the CIF Doubles division of the prestigious Ojai Tennis Tournament.

Paulsen and Fernandez del Valle got past a team from Agoura, 6-0, 6-0. They then rallied to beat a team from Scripps Ranch, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.

“They played well to grind out the win,” CdM Coach Jamie Gresh said in a text message.

The CdM duo will play Alex Fry and Kyle Sillman of Mira Costa in the CIF Doubles round of 16 on Friday at 8 a.m., at the Ojai Valley Athletic Club.

The other locals alive in the CIF division are in singles, Sage Hill senior Adam Langevin and Newport Harbor freshman Max McKennon. Langevin won a pair of three-set matches Thursday, beating Alec Rabinowitz of Windward, 5-7, 6-2, 6-3, before topping Parth Sharma of West Torrance, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3. Langevin will play Kento Perera of San Marcos on Friday at 9 a.m. at Libbey Park in the round of 16.

McKennon beat Jacob Lee of Valencia, 6-3, 6-1, in the first round before getting past Brett Brinkman of Chaminade, 6-4, 6-2. McKennon will play Leo Wang of San Marino in the round of 16 on Friday at 9:30 a.m., at Ojai Valley Athletic Club.

CdM’s Kyle Pham lost in the first round of CIF singles to Sharma, 6-1, 6-3. The Fountain Valley doubles team of Ryan Trinh and Jonathan Dang lost to the team from Scripps Ranch, 6-4, 6-2, in the first round.

In other junior divisions at “The Ojai,” Fountain Valley’s Hanh Pham upset No. 5-seeded Hermehr Kaur of Redlands, 6-2, 1-6, 7-5, in a girls’ 18s match. Pham will play Caroline Vincent of Pacific Palisades in the round of 16 Friday morning. In another girls’ 18s round of 16 match Friday, CdM senior Jasie Dunk will play top-seeded Cali Jankowski of Carlsbad.

In girls’ 16 singles, CdM’s Roxy MacKenzie will play No. 5-seeded Casie Wooten of Torrance in a round of 16 match Friday.

In girls’ 14 singles, No. 2-seeded Leyden Games of Newport Beach will play No. 9 Bryn Johnson of Fountain Valley in an all-local round of 16 match Friday at 9:30 a.m. at the Thacher School. No. 5-seeded Kaytlin Taylor of Huntington Beach will face No. 9 Kaila Barksdale of San Diego in another round of 16 match at the same time and venue.

In boys’ 16 singles, No. 5-seeded Dylan Taylor of Huntington Beach will play No. 9 Matthew Poh of Manhattan Beach in the round of 16. No. 9 Rohun Krishnan, who is a freshman at Sage Hill, will face No. 5 Nadim Motaghedi of Cerritos.

In the Ojai women’s open singles tournament, Shakhnoza Khatamova of Costa Mesa will play Jwany Sherif of Huntington Beach in a round of 16 match Friday morning. In men’s open doubles, the all-Costa Mesa team of Fernando Fernandez and Amarit Sanchez will play No. 3-seeded Lester Cook of Ojai and Kevin Lynch of Colorado Springs in a round of 16 match.

Also, in a women’s open doubles match, Khatamova and Shahzoda Hatamova of Costa Mesa will play Andrea Madrigal of San Dimas and Laina Matsuda of Poway.

Junior college players from Orange Coast College are competing in the Ojai community college events.
