Ross, Pavlik win AVP Austin Open

April Ross and Whitney Pavlik avenged their only loss in the final to win the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals Austin Open on Sunday.

Ross, a Newport Harbor High product and Costa Mesa resident, teamed with Laguna Beach’s Pavlik, who played at UC Irvine, to defeat Kim DiCello and Emily Stockman 19-21, 21-16, 15-11 in a 60-minute title match on Sunday.

Ross and Pavlik, the No. 2 seeded team, split the $15,000 winner’s purse.

Ross and Pavlik lost 18-21, 21-11, 15-11 in the third round of the main draw to No. 3-seeded DiCello and Stockman to drop into the contenders’ bracket.

Ross and Pavlik defeated Jennifer Fopma and Kelly Reeves 21-18, 19-21, 15-8 to earn a trip to Sunday’s semifinals, in which they defeated Angela Bensend and Geena Urango 21-11, 21-15 in 37 minutes.

In the men’s tournament, Huntington Beach resident Reid Priddy, a former Olympian for the U.S. men’s team, paired with Maddison McKibbin to share fifth place. They split $5,200.

Newport Harbor product Ty Tramblie and partner Ty Loomis, a former UCI indoor player, finished tied for 13th and split $2,000.

The AVP tour continues on June 8-11 in New York.
