The star-studded top of the order for Huntington Beach High’s softball team took first-team honors this season.

Ivy Davis, the shortstop, hit .416 while finishing tied for the team lead with 29 RBI. She had eight doubles, seven home runs, and one triple.

Jadelyn Allchin, the team’s speedy center-fielder, hit out of the leadoff spot. Her .430 average was the highest among anyone to appear in 21 games or more for the Oilers this season.

She had nine doubles, six home runs, four triples, and 27 RBI. The sophomore led the team in runs scored with 31, adding 14 stolen bases.

Chance Burden provided a good glove in right field while also serving as the table-setter for the middle of the Huntington Beach order. She hit .353 with eight doubles and three home runs. The senior added five sacrifice bunts, which ranked second on the team.

All three players will continue their playing careers at Pac-12 schools. Davis will play for Arizona. Allchin and Burden, the outfielders, will play at Washington and Oregon State, respectively.

Third baseman and Oregon commit Allee Bunker and freshman starting pitcher Grace Uribe were selected to the second team. Bunker matched Davis’ output of 29 RBI.

Rookie Rush rescued Marina

With presumed starter Amber Baldwin dealing with a back injury, freshman Emily Rush took over the majority of the team’s pitching duties.

She gave the Vikings a chance to win with her arm and her bat, leading Marina to a third-place finish in the Sunset League and a playoff spot.

For her efforts, Rush was named as the Sunset League’s Rookie of the Year. She hit .386 with eight doubles, four home runs, and 25 RBI.

Longtime Vikings catcher Ryan King was added to the first team. She split time between her primary position as a backstop to play some third base, too.

The senior produced a .409 batting average. She had two doubles, one triple, one home run, and 14 RBI.

King and Baldwin will both be playing for Middle Tennessee State University in college.

Corner outfielder Ashley Pilatos rounded out Marina’s first-team selections. The junior hit her first career home run in a high-scoring affair at Edison on April 13. The Vikings won that game, 13-11.

Pilatos had five doubles and two home runs to go with her .328 batting average.

Sophomore second baseman Nicole Logrecco and freshman center-fielder Paige Shafer earned second-team honors, as the Vikings made the postseason for the first time under third-year coach Mandee Farish.

All things started with Domingo for Fountain Valley

Madeline Domingo caught a lot of innings and saw a lot of pitches in her career with the Barons.

It is only natural that she would see the ball pretty well at the plate, too. She was the team leader in a number of offensive categories – doubles (seven), triples (three), home runs (four), and RBI (24).

Her .436 batting average ranked second on the team. Zoey Berg led the team, batting at a clip of .524 with four home runs over 17 games.

Domingo has signed with the University of the Pacific in Stockton.

Senior shortstop Stephanie Tsai was among the Sunset League’s second-team selections.

Edison gets two on first team

Riley Wester, a Notre Dame-bound outfielder, led Edison’s all-league selections for softball. The senior made some dynamic plays in center field, especially coming in on the ball to take away base hits.

Serena Starks also got a first-team nod, while Rachel Abboud and Alex Loomis were named to the second team.

Newport Harbor’s Freeman, Surber named to second team

In a year that saw CIF Southern Section Division 1 finalist Los Alamitos receive 10 all-league selections between the first and second teams, it was likely that someone would be left out.

Leah Freeman, the Daily Pilot Softball Player of the Year in 2016, was relegated to the second team this season. The sophomore hit .423 this year, supplying six doubles, five triples, one home run, and 18 RBI.

Sailors senior shortstop Diana Surber also made the second team. She was the only other Newport Harbor player to bat over .300. Her finishing line included a .377 average, four doubles, and a team-high of 16 runs scored.

Surber was perhaps best known for never leaving the field with a clean uniform, as she could always be expected to sell out for any ground ball hit in her direction. She also led the team with 19 stolen bases.

Los Alamitos runs the table

Oregon-bound senior Mary Iakopo, a power-hitting catcher with a cannon for an arm, was named as the Sunset League MVP.

The preseason No. 1 team in the nation, ranked by MaxPreps, cleaned house with the awards, as senior Ryan Denhart was named the league’s pitcher of the year.

Both players were Orange County All-Stars, and the Griffins added 10 more players on the all-league teams.

Cami Sellers, Jenna Kean, Kaitlin Parsons, Alexa Schultz, and Allison Englant received first-team honors for Los Alamitos.

Russ provides ‘no-pass’ zone

Po Russ, a junior catcher at Ocean View High, took home first-team all-Golden West League honors after a stellar defensive season.

The Rutgers commit allowed just one passed ball in 20 games. She also batted .435 with seven doubles to give the offense a boost.

Strong defense was the path to first-team glory for the Seahawks, as third baseman Caitlyn Sideris also earned the distinction. The junior started most plays inside the third-base bag to take away the bunt, and she was still able to knock down the hard-hit balls that came her way from close range.

She hit .370 with a triple and a home run in 17 games played.

Ocean View made the CIF-SS Division 4 wild card playoffs, finishing with an overall record of 9-11 and going 6-4 for third place in league.

Seahawks to be selected to the second team were senior first baseman Kari Lane, junior center-fielder Kim MacPherson, and senior pitcher Breann Page.

Page played for North Orange County in the senior softball All-Star Game.
