Newport Harbor’s Spitz competes at Junior Nationals

Newport Harbor High incoming junior Ayla Spitz will compete in the 200-meter freestyle and 100-meter backstroke preliminaries Friday at the Speedo Junior National Swimming Championships in East Meadow, New York.

Spitz, swimming for the Irvine Novaquatics club, has the 29th-fastest seed time in the 200 free with a 2:03.05. In the 100 backstroke, she has the 13th-fastest seed time, a 1:02.66.

Preliminaries are in the morning, with the finals starting at 3 p.m. Pacific time.

Spitz already finished 13th in the 100 freestyle on Tuesday night, in the “B” final. She touched in 56.51 seconds.

Other local swimmers competing at Junior Nationals include Laguna Beach High’s Kasey Karkoska and Shayla Erickson of Fountain Valley High.

Karkoska is swimming the 100 backstroke prelims on Friday, and Erickson in the 200 freestyle.
