Team USA women into quarterfinals at FINA Worlds

BUDAPEST, Hungary — The U.S. women’s water polo senior national team beat New Zealand, 22-7, on Thursday at the FINA World Championships.

With the win, Team USA claims the Group B crown and earns a bye into the quarterfinals. Team USA will play Monday against an opponent to be determined.

Corona del Mar High product Maddie Musselman (UCLA) scored four goals against New Zealand. Laguna Beach High graduates Makenzie and Aria Fischer (Stanford) both scored two goals each, while Edison graduate Alys Williams (UCLA) added a goal.

Maggie Steffens led everyone with five goals for Team USA, which breezed to a 12-3 halftime lead. Musselman had three straight goals in the second quarter to help build the advantage.

Gabby Stone and Amanda Longan combined for four saves for the winners.

Team USA went seven for 10 on the power play.
