Around Town: Elvis-inspired play opens Friday at Laguna Beach High School

The Laguna Beach High School Drama and Park Avenue Players will open their new production, “All Shook Up,” on Friday at the school’s theater. It runs through March 25.

The story, inspired by Elvis Presley, features a guitar-playing young man who rides into a square town in a square state and changes everything, according to a news release.

Costa Mesa police honor employees and volunteers

The Costa Mesa Police Department recognized volunteers and sworn and civilian staff members at its annual employee recognition breakfast March 8.

“It’s truly an honor and a privilege to lead a team of high-achieving, professional men and women,” Chief Rob Sharpnack said in a statement. “They say great leaders rise up and achieve status when confronted with adversity. I can say the same thing collectively about the men and women in my organization. My officers and civilian staff earn every bit of recognition, and I’m very proud of them.”

Investigator Darren Wood was named Officer of the Year. Edwin Garcia was named Explorer of the Year. Records shift supervisor Jeanette Zangger was named Civilian Supervisor of the Year. Senior records technician Donna Jo “DJ” Hendrick was awarded Civilian Employee of the Year. Dorothy Ceccarini was chosen as Volunteer of the Year, and Sgt. Zack Hoferitza was named Sworn Supervisor of the Year. Officers Daniel Holl, Jacob Jacobi and Mark Garcia were honored with lifesaving awards.

Laguna High receives state recognition

Laguna Beach High School was recently recognized by the California court system for its effort to teach civic learning, according to a news release.

The Award of Merit recognized the school’s Advanced Placement European history and Model United Nations programs.

Executive director to leave SchoolPower this summer

Robin Rounaghi announced her pending departure as executive director of SchoolPower, which supports Laguna Beach schools.

She will be leaving her post this summer to spend more time with her father, who has Parkinson’s disease. She has served as executive director for five years and is a longtime volunteer for the group.

“SchoolPower has been like a second family to me,” she said in a statement. “My belief in our organization and its mission is as strong as ever. It is the strength of our board leadership, our staff, our generous supporters and our educators that gives me confidence that the progress we’ve made will continue.”

CdM real estate agent helps with health screenings

Corona del Mar Realtor Adrienne Brandes of Surterre Properties recently assisted at an event in Norco that screened young children for risk of sudden cardiac arrest.

The screenings, each valued at more than $1,500, took place at the SilverLakes Sports Complex.

“We are proud to report that we were able to screen more than 200 children at the inaugural screening, including several who need follow-up treatment,” Brandes said in a statement.

Costa Mesa karate studio to host fundraising tournament

Bob White Karate Studio in Costa Mesa will host its annual invitational tournament March 23-25 to raise money for Royal Family Kids, a youth nonprofit.

To date, the event has raised more than $1 million.

Costa Mesa church hosting public art event

First United Methodist Church in Costa Mesa will present a public art project by artist Scott Erickson from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Good Friday, March 30.

“We believe art has the power to go beyond the eyes to touch the heart,” the Rev. Sarah Heath said in a statement. “When we experience a familiar story through public art, it can open our hearts up to seeing God and the world in fresh ways.”

The church is at 420 W. 19th St.

Nonprofit WHW to hold annual fundraiser in H.B.

WHW, an Irvine-based nonprofit that helps unemployed and underemployed people develop skills and resources, will hold a fundraiser April 7 in Huntington Beach.
