Boys’ Basketball: Busy summer ends for Breakers
A busy finish to a 29-game summer season came to an end Monday for the Laguna Beach High boys’ basketball team.
The Breakers, who competed in summer leagues at Dana Hills and Godinez, played their two final games Monday. They lost to Tustin but defeated Orange Coast League rival Coast Mesa.
Last weekend, Laguna competed at the Asics Double Pump Best of the West AAU Tournament. The Breakers took on four AAU teams: Superior Athletes Basketball Club, Chino Hills Big Ballers, Arizona Flight and Intermountain Basketball Club (IBC).
The tourney started July 16 and concluded Sunday at the American Sports Centers in Anaheim.
“It was about what I expected playing against AAU teams,” Laguna Coach Bret Fleming said. “We were very competitive in a couple of the games and not so much in a couple of others. I do think we learned a lot about ourselves and how we need to play to be successful.
“We played 16 games in the last 15 days, which is exactly what this group needed, to play a lot of games and gain as much experience as possible.
“With only one returning player (Isaac Wulff) with any major minutes last year, we needed to see what it’s going to take to be competitive. Graduating all five starters has definitely left a void, but we’ve got a good young group ready to take the challenge.”

Youth Basketball Camp
Laguna Beach High basketball Coach Bret Fleming will run a Youth Basketball Camp next week at Thurston Middle School in Laguna Beach.
The camp begins Monday and runs through Aug. 1. Camp instruction for youth grades second-through-fifth is from 8 to 10 a.m.; instruction for youth grades sixth-through-eighth is from 10 a.m. to noon.

Baseball
The Breakers took on Beckman and La Habra in recent summer game action.
In a home scrimmage with La Habra Monday, Zac Kovacic, Will McInerny, Anthony Norelli and Jeff Bruyjtens each had a hit and each pitched a scoreless inning.
“We had one bad inning against Beckman that really cost us, and in the La Habra game, we pitched, played defense and overall played a solid game,” Laguna Coach Mike Bair said.
The Breakers conclude their summer season next week with a game Monday at Irvine and a home game Wednesday against Capistrano Valley Christian.

Boys’ Cross-Country
The Breakers will be in Santa Barbara next Wednesday to run in the Nite Moves summer race. Coach Scott Wittkop said the Laguna team will include 15-20 runners.
All-league and All-CIF runner Cameron Zuziak won the Nite Moves boys’ 5K as a junior last August.

Football
The Breakers visited Northwood for a passing game competition Thursday.
Results from the 7-on-7 scrimmage, their final scrimmage of the summer season, weren’t available at press time.
The Breakers continue with their summer training through Aug. 14. They begin fall camp Aug. 15 and open their season Sept. 5.
