The Laguna College of Art & Design (LCAD) will host the 2013 National Portfolio Day on Saturday at the Westin Hotel, 400 W. Broadway, San Diego.

Thirty-seven arts institutions will be present at the national recruitment event, where artists keen to earn an undergraduate degree in the visual arts are welcome.

National Portfolio Day targets the needs of visual artists and designers by connecting them with representatives from colleges accredited by the National Assn. of Schools of Art and Design. Those representatives will be on hand to review portfolios — which should include works in progress, sketchbooks and tear sheets — discuss programs and answer queries.

Last year, LCAD faculty met with more than 400 prospective students, and 18% of this fall’s applicants said they attended a National Portfolio Day during the process of selecting a college. LCAD plans to be present at 21 of 38 upcoming National Portfolio Days nationwide, along with hosting the one Saturday.

The Crystal Cove State Park Visiting Artists Program spotlights Kirsten Anderson from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday at the Education Commons in the Historic District.

“I learn about light and color by working outdoors from direct observation and later translate my successes into larger studio paintings,” the Long Beach-based plein air artist said in a release. “I have a wanderlust spirit that fits perfectly with an outdoor painter.”

Guests are invited to watch the award-winning Anderson at work. Parking is available in the park’s Los Trancos parking lot. Cost is $15. The fee is waived for those who eat at the Beachcomber Café.
