The Orange County district attorney’s office is investigating an incident over the weekend involving a Newport Beach police officer who fired a gun and wounded an armed suspect, according to a news release issued Tuesday afternoon by the Newport Beach Police Department.

Authorities responded to calls about a domestic violence incident in the 1600 block of San Miguel Drive at around 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, according to the news release. The suspect, identified as Stacey Noonan, a 43-year-old female resident of the city, allegedly fled to the Baywood Apartment Homes before police arrived on the scene.

Police then located Noonan, who was allegedly armed with a weapon. Department spokesman Sgt. Joshua Vincelet said he could not provide further details due to the ongoing investigation but did confirm “the weapon possessed by the suspect satisfied the Department of Justice’s definition of an armed suspect.”

According to the news release, the confrontation led to the shooting incident. One officer received unspecified minor injuries and Noonan received a non-life-threatening gunshot wound and was transported to a nearby hospital.

Court records indicate Noonan faces two felony counts of resisting an executive officer and misdemeanor counts of battery, violation of a protective or stay away order and petty theft. Noonan was scheduled for an arraignment Tuesday afternoon at the Central Justice Center in Santa Ana.

The news release describes the officer involved as a nine-year police veteran who is on administrative leave in accordance with department policy as it regards to shooting incidents.
